MATTAWA - The big change for Wahluke High School boys basketball this year will be at the helm.

Jeff Ahmann returns to the head coach position after four years with the girls. He coached the boys the previous six years.

One thing that won't change is a lack of height. Ahmann has dipped into the sophomore class for his tallest player, his own son Collin.

The good news is that the younger Ahmann, 6-1, can play. He is basketball savvy and could prove to be a leader.

"He can play all the spots on the floor," the coach said.

The next tallest player is 6-0 senior Alan Caro. He was a starter last year.

Also at 6-0 is senior Jose Espindola. He did not start last year but has varsity experience.

Another starter from last year is 5-10 senior Librado Barajas. Also on hand is 5-9 senior Oscar Onofre, who started at point guard last year.

The rest of the regular rotation will include 5-7 senior Gabino Abarca, 5-10 senior Tyus Squeochs, 5-10 senior Saul Ramos, 5-10 junior Texas transfer Genaro Rivera and 5-9 sophomore Alex Chiprez.

"We're very fast. We can play all 10 guys," coach Ahmann said.

Wahluke will open the season at the Othello Jamboree tonight. Thursday it will play at Kittitas. Saturday it will play at Goldendale, and the home opener will be next Tuesday against Quincy.
