Christmas cantata set for Sunday

MOSES LAKE - The Othello Choral Society announces and invites the community to join them in ushering in the Christmas season.

The choir's schedule of events includes a performance of their Christmas cantata, 'Come Messiah King,' at 3:15 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.

The cantata was created and arranged by Randy Vader, Jay Rouse and Rose Aspinall, and directed by Bob Reichert, William "Bill" Hansen stated in a recent letter to the Herald.

Soloists include Steve Agenbroad, Cheryl Robbins, Paul Firth, Dennis Adams, Treva Reichert, Donna Reichert, and Stan Anderton, all of Othello, and Joanne Peters, of Moses Lake. From the children's choir, Othello youth Carly Povost, Alexis Simmons and Amy Bates also have solos. Dennis Adams, Jenny Marsh, Tamara Lumsden, Dixie Fultz and Ginny Johnson, all of Othello, will narrate.

A cantata, Hansen said, is usually religious in nature, and tells a story. This particular one celebrates the purpose of the coming of the Christian Messiah. "We don't have any jingle bells!" he said.

Almost every song is preceded by some narration, Hansen said, but it is not a play.

This will be the 35th year the group will perform for the holidays. They also do a dinner theater performance in the spring.

Admission is free, however, goodwill offerings are welcomed to help pay for production of the event, music awards and scholarships, Hansen said. Scholarships help students from third grade to junior high pay for music camp in the summer. He said the group is trying to get music to be a more important part of the community.

Professionally recorded CDs and DVDs will be sold, as well, Hansen said.
