Reader weighs in on Committees on Safety

| December 6, 2013 5:00 AM

Regarding Committees of Safety, the best models come from those formed within the American colonies. See http://www.committee.org/PCOSindex.htm for a good starting point.

"Cousin Sam" didn't select models relevant to the present. Comparison to the French Revolution shows the need for education. The comment is "apples to rotten oranges" comparison.

The French Revolution, and Reign of Terror, was mob democracy overthrow of a tyrannical monarchy. There was no foundation of a stable government or rational thinking in France that could lead to a peaceful transition to a better government. (Note, these comments are my impression of history as I have not studied the French Revolution in detail).

The American Revolution was due to the colonists needing defense from the increasing tyrannical rule of the King of England. Each colony had governmental structures headed by people who had sworn allegiance to the King. The colonists did not destroy local governments when those governors departed, but used them as the foundation for bringing the colonies together under the Continental Congress. Militias had existed, and trained to defend the colonists, their homes, and property. The committees of safety and observation from colonial days were developed to assure the public safety.

The King of England declared the colonies were in rebellion and cut them off from the protection of the Crown prior to sending his army to control the colonies. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence to tell the world of our independence - the King had already declared we were independent.

Our government officials take an oath to the United States Constitution, not to a King or the President! We the People have a duty to understand the Constitution! Today's Committees of Safety, as well as independent citizens, recognize that the "free press" has failed to properly vet our elected representatives.
