February 6, 1944 – June 9, 2026
JoAnn Cecile Hochstatter, 82, of Moses Lake, passed away on June 9, 2026, while fighting pancreatic cancer. She was born to Cecil and Irene Marchand on Feb. 6, 1944, in Omak, Wash. She and her family moved to Odessa, Wash., where she, her mother, sister Janet, and brother James lived on grandfather Marcus Smith’s wheat farm while their dad served in the U.S. Marine Corps. The farm served as a source of security and help from their grandparents and many uncles, aunts, and cousins. In 1953, JoAnn’s family moved to Moses Lake, where her parents worked at the former Larson Air Force Base. JoAnn graduated from Moses Lake High School, class of 1963.
Rose Hill
April 7, 1949 – June 7, 2026
Rose Hill, 77, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026, with her three daughters by her side. She was born April 7, 1949, in Ephrata, Wash. to Rose and Charles Freestone. She spent her childhood in Ephrata, Wash. and graduated from Ephrata High School in 1967. Post-graduation, Rose attended Big Bend Community College. Rose settled in Moses Lake with Greg Hill where they raised a family. She was a very involved, loving mother, attending every dance recital, sport event, play and concert. When she was not at home spending time with her children, she held a variety of jobs including the Grant County Courthouse, World Book Encyclopedia and Skaug Brothers, and at one point opened and operated her own store, Rose’s Sportswear and Novelty. Beginning in 1996 she worked for the Moses Lake School District as a school bus driver, where she remained for nearly two decades, retiring in 2015. Rose was an avid golfer, a familiar face at the Moses Lake Golf and Country Club and Moses Pointe. Her competitive spirit and skill on the green earned her multiple club championships over the years. She also enjoyed quilting, reading, and gardening, but above all, she loved spending time with her family including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Linda Dianne Benson
August 7, 1948 – May 29, 2026
Linda Dianne Benson, 77, of Moses Lake, Washington, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Linda was born on Aug. 7, 1948, in Clarinda, Iowa, to Palmer and Dorothy Glass. As the daughter of farming parents, she spent her childhood in both Iowa and Washington before her family eventually settled in Moses Lake. It was there that she met the love of her life, Norman Benson. Linda graduated from Moses Lake High School and later attended the Moses Lake School of Beauty. Along with three partners, she became a successful business owner, co-owning a beauty salon in Moses Lake before becoming the sole owner of The Hair Affair, where she spent most of her career. Her talent as a hairdresser earned her the respect, loyalty and friendship of countless clients throughout the community.

Woman arrested for DUI in collision with 2 streetlights and trash can downtown Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE – On June 10 at about 2:30 p.m., Moses Lake Officers responded to a traffic accident in the 200 block of West Broadway at the corner of Beech Street. Officers found that a pink 2000 Volkswagen had left the roadway and struck two streetlights and a trash can at the corner There were no injuries, and the driver, 53-year-old Tanya Robinson from Wenatchee, was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI and possession of methamphetamine). Robinson was released pending lab results from the Washington State Toxicology Lab.

MATTAWA — The Mattawa City Council has approved a full ban on the sale and distribution of kratom and kratom‑derived products, making it the third city in Grant County to enact such restrictions following similar actions in Royal City and Warden. Othello, located in Adams County, has also implemented a similar ban. The council adopted Ordinance 26‑707 during its June 4 regular meeting.
Maverick Ian Anderson commits to Vikings wrestling program
MOSES LAKE — After closing the chapter on his time as a Maverick, Ian Anderson is staying home after he announced his commitment to the Big Bend Community College Vikings men’s wrestling program. However, it was never clear throughout his time at Moses Lake High School if that’s what he wanted to do, he said. “The first three years, I wasn't really doing much at state because of my knees,” Anderson said. In back-to-back years, Anderson dealt with knee injuries that limited his time on the mat. By his junior year, he suffered a torn meniscus in both of his knees, ultimately requiring surgery. Despite the setbacks, he kept his focus on having a strong senior season.

Erickson looks back on a busy and successful four-sport high school career
WARDEN — A four-sport athlete is not someone you often come across due to the time and dedication it takes for success in one sport, but for Amaya Erickson, tackling that challenge was something she was up for in her senior season. “My family’s always been really big into sports,” said Erickson. “Both my parents have played and my siblings both play, so I guess they’re all a really great inspiration for me.”

Lind-Ritzville Class of 2026 moves on with shared memories
RITZVILLE — The Lind-Ritzville High School Class of 2026 had a lot of shared history. “Our classes had a unique journey,” said Salutatorian Lilly Fannin. “Before we were one graduating class, we were two separate classes from different schools. When we came together in middle school, none of us knew exactly what to expect, but instead of staying separated, we welcomed each other and formed new friendships. As the years went on, these two groups expanded into one, bringing a class of supporting each other, laughed together, and grew together.” Thirty-five seniors graduated from Lind-Ritzville on June 6. They filed into the Gilson Gym two by two to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance,” played by the Lind-Ritzville High School Band, then took their places while Principal Kevin Terris recognized them for their accomplishments.

Sage-N-Sun to feature patriotic theme, drone show
EPHRATA — Sage-N-Sun will fill downtown Ephrata this weekend with music, parades, sunshine, fun and a semiquincentennial celebration. “Everything is patriotic-themed,” said Britney MacLeod, director of the Ephrata Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event. “From our bands to the decoration of the town and the parade, the festival (will be) red, white and blue.” The festivities begin Thursday evening with the Youth Parade and then take off in earnest the next morning with the Ephrata Lions Club Fun Run, followed by Grand Parade, according to the Chamber’s online schedule.

Fletcher named new Eagles volleyball head coach
SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake Eagles volleyball team will be under new leadership this fall as Erin Fletcher has been selected as the new head coach. She is following the successful tenure of the previous head coach, Nikki Noble, who helped guide the team to multiple state appearances over the years. “I’m so excited,” said Fletcher. “I’ve had the opportunity to watch these girls play the last couple years as a (referee). I’m really excited to be able to step in after Coach Noble and continue on that winning and competitive spirit that they’ve had for so long and kind of take it now to the next level.” Her love for athletics came from growing up in an athletic family of basketball players, but in second grade, she became the first in her family to start playing volleyball. From there, a passion for volleyball began to grow.

Tigers start summer 3-1 after split with Sunnyside Christian
EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tiger Baseball Club (3-1) finished their second matchup of the season as they split a doubleheader with Sunnyside Christian Tuesday evening. “I was pleased with a lot of aspects of the doubleheader,” said Tigers Head Coach David Tempel. “The summertime is all about development and getting some experience. The good part about (Tuesday) is we were in some different situations that we haven’t seen much, so we were able to learn from those and use those to our advantage.” Sunnyside was the first on the board during game one as they put up two runs in the top of the second inning. The Tigers responded at the bottom of the third as they put up five runs to claim the lead.
Sheriff candidates encourage public to engage at Thursday forum
MOSES LAKE — Voters will have an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates vying to become Grant County’s next sheriff during a community forum Thursday evening. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m., June 11, at Generations Church Assembly of God, 431 E. Brown Ave., Moses Lake, and is organized by the Grant County Republican Party. Incumbent Sheriff Joey Kriete and challengers Josh Sainsbury and Darrick Gregg are all expected to participate.
Dennis ‘Darryl’ Nelson
September 10, 1952 – May 13, 2026
Dennis passed away on May 13, 2026, surrounded by family, due to complications from surgery. Dennis was born to Albert “Al” Nelson and Lois “Jean” Nelson on Sept. 10, 1952 in Moses Lake, Washington. Dennis grew up in Moses Lake and graduated high school there. He dated, and then married, Lisa Lynn Haley in February 1974 in the home of his parents. From this marriage they had two children, Lana and Robert. They later divorced. Dennis ran a service station in his younger years before becoming a meat cutter. He worked cutting meat for over 40 years. Some of the places he worked for were B&B Market, Buttrey’s and Market Place. In 2010 the store he was working for shut down and he made the decision to move to Townsend, Mont. with his daughter and her husband and work his last seven years before he could retire at Ry Timber. After he retired, he decided to buy a bar, The Mint Bar and Restaurant, with his daughter and her husband. He spent every day there meeting new people and making friends, having a few drinks and spending some money playing machines, and occasionally doing some work if his daughter got on him. During his time in Montana, he fell back in love with hunting, fishing and camping with his family. Dennis will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Richard Faulkner
Richard Allen Faulkner, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, at the Hospice House in Spokane Washington. He is preceded in death by his father Donald A. Faulkner, his brother Donald L. Faulkner and his mother Dorothy O. Faulkner. Known as Dick to his friends and family, Richard graduated from Anacortes High School in 1955 before joining the Air Force as a radio repairman in 1956. He found joy in his travels, particularly in Alaska, which always held a special place in his heart. After completing his military service in 1962, Richard graduated from Skagit Valley College before earning his accounting degree from the University of Washington. In Seattle he met Diane. The two married in 1965 after which Richard worked as an accountant for 33 years while raising four children

Our hearts ache that we must share the passing of our Mama, Nana, Sister, Auntie Carla and B.C. on May 31 at the age of 79. She went to be with Jesus surrounded by family with love and deep thankfulness for her life. Carla was born in Longview, Washington, the first child of six, the daughter of George Lester and Lois Evelyn Grieb. She spent her early childhood living in the Columbia River Gorge, Longview, Lyle, Wishram and Goldendale, Washington as her father worked for the SP&S railroad and the family moved many times. Carla was a loving, caring, passionate and deeply faithful woman who dedicated her life to the Lord, family, friends, church and community. She served in her church for many years in several ministry roles and found great joy in seeing people follow after the Lord despite facing her own heartaches and challenges along the way.

OTHELLO — Brent McFarlane has been hired as the permanent Othello Police Chief. Othello City Council members approved the appointment Monday on a unanimous vote. City Administrator Aaron Garza said in a separate interview that city officials thought McFarlane would be the right fit.

The World Cup kicks off June 11; locals weigh in on the tournament
MOSE LAKE—The FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11 with host countries the United States, Canada and Mexico ready to stage the biggest event in sports. Billions will be watching worldwide and attending the many stadiums in North America’s cities staging the games – Seattle being one of them. The Columbia Basin Herald asked community members about their interest in the tournament and their predictions of a champion. As one would expect, the Mexican American fans locally expressed the greatest interest and fervor for the tournament. Rafael Torres spoke while bowling at Tin Pin in Moses Lake. He was visiting the area from Yakima for vacation. Torres is an avid fan of the Mexico team and is hopeful they will make it into the second round. Though rooting for Mexico, Torres favors Brazil to win the championship.
Othello residents to vote on fire district annexation next spring
OTHELLO — Othello residents will be voting in spring 2027 on a proposal to annex the city into Adams County Fire District 5. City administrator Aaron Garza said Othello residents would receive a letter outlining some of the details of the proposed annexation in July. Residents will not only be asked to decide about annexation, but also about a possible increase in the assessment for fire services.
Basin students selected state Future Farmers of America officers
MOSES LAKE — Arielle Montoya of Moses Lake and Tessa Hauskin of Ephrata will serve as Future Farmers of America officers next year for Washington state. Montoya was named state treasurer and Hauskin state reporter. “It’s a big deal,” said Ephrata High School FFA advisor Landra Kosa. “It’s a pretty rigorous process to be chosen to be a state officer.” In the history of Moses Lake High School, only five students have attained the honor, said FFA Advisor Tony Kern, one in the 1970s and four others, including Montoya, since 2014. Hauskin is the first Tiger elected to state office since 2008, Kosa said.
Mavs football begins season prep with QB competition in focus
MOSES LAKE — It’s only June, but the Mavericks football program is already working toward the 2026 season. “We have a lot of guys that are bought in,” Head Coach Kyler Haneberg said. “We're allowed 10 practices, and so with our quarterback competition right now, and all the other competitions, these 10 practices are crucial for our guys to separate themselves but included in those 10 practices is the last one, where it's a scrimmage at Royal (High School).”

Johnson set to lead young Eagles team for 2026/27
SOAP LAKE — Joe Johnson has been hired as the Soap Lake Eagles new Boys Basketball head coach for the upcoming 2026/27 school year. The new hire said he is excited for the opportunity to start with a young team and help them grow throughout the season. “I’m excited. It’s an opportunity that I’ve been looking forward to,” said Johnson. “I’ve enjoyed basketball throughout my life, I’ve played a lot and it’s my favorite of the things to coach.”

UPDATE: As of 6:15 p.m., SR 17 has reopened, but North Lake Road Northeast is still closed due to fire crews fighting the fire. Drivers are still asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes. MOSES LAKE — State Route 17 between Neppel and McConihe Rd has been closed due to a fire in the area and heavy smoke, according to a statement from Grant County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities are asking that people avoid the area and find alternative routes. Officers are on scene working to get the fire under control. Laurel ‘Laurie’ Parker
Laurel Ann Parker passed away, after a long battle with cancer, on Feb. 10, 2026. She was 74 years old and is survived by her husband John III, her son John Parker IV, his wife Jessica and their wonderful children Kendall and John V, whom she dearly loved. They called her “Gramma with the Sparkles,” because of her personality and her love for jewelry. She is also survived by her siblings Michael, Eileen and Patrick Palace and her many special lifelong friends.

Citation issued in Rocky Ford fire
MOSES LAKE — A Moses Lake man was cited for second-degree reckless burning after sparks from some work he was doing allegedly started a fire about 13 miles north of Moses Lake Monday morning. Grant County Fire Marshal Nathan Poplowski said the man and a friend were doing some metalwork and started a small fire, which they extinguished. The friend expressed concern about continuing to work and left, but the man decided to keep working, he said.
Port of Moses Lake power project about to enter second phase
MOSES LAKE — The next phase of a project to build electrical generation facilities at the Port of Moses Lake should be a follow-up study to determine what’s economically, technically and legally feasible. That was the recommendation of a report delivered to port commissioners on Monday.

At AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, workers on Tuesday continued the process of covering the “AT&T” on the stadium's facade. The work began last week.

Sixers 18U falls in Moses Lake showdown semifinals
MOSES LAKE — The Central Washington Sixers 18U (5-3) suffered a 9-6 loss to the Orting Baseball Club 18U in the semifinals of the Moses Lake Showdown on Sunday. This comes after a 3-0 start to the weekend tournament. The Sixers were competitive throughout the game, scoring four runs across the second and third innings. However, a three-run inning in the top of the fifth increased Orting's lead as they held off the Sixers for the win.

Frances Marie Durepo (Daigle), 79, passed on June 5, 2026, in Moses Lake, Washington. Franny was born Nov. 10, 1946, to Leo P. and Rita Marie (Ouellette) Daigle. From the beginning, Franny carried herself with warmth, determination, and a spirit that drew people in. The family moved to Pateros, Washington in 1957 when they purchased an apple and prune orchard there. He graduated from Pateros High School and then worked on the family orchard, a place he loved more than anywhere. After the sale of the orchard, he moved to Ephrata, Washington in 1977.

Born in Rupert, Idaho, Larry was the ninth of 11 children born to David Saunders Millard and Anna Harriett Hansen. Royal City bans kratom, becoming second in Grant County
ROYAL CITY — The Royal City City Council unanimously approved a ban on the sale and distribution of kratom and kratom-derived products during its June 2 meeting, making it the second city in Grant County to take action against the substance. The ordinance adopts a new chapter of municipal code prohibiting the sale, advertising and distribution of kratom within city limits. The ban will take effect 60 days after passage. Royal City follows Warden, whose city council enacted a similar ban earlier this year. Othello, located in Adams County, enacted a similar ban this year as well. Grant County Health District also released a March 27 statement encouraging local governments to consider restrictions on the substance.

Rock-throwing suspect arrested after Capitol campus chase
OLYMPIA — A 21-year-old man was arrested early Thursday after allegedly smashing windows at the Washington State Legislative Building and leading officers on a brief pursuit through the Capitol Campus. According to the Washington State Patrol, a trooper heard loud noises around 1:15 a.m. and spotted a man throwing large rocks at first-floor windows on the building’s northwest side. When another trooper arrived, the suspect fled in a white 2009 Chevrolet Malibu.

MOSES LAKE — The new Moses Lake office of Ticor Title Company held a ribbon-cutting Tuesday with the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce, welcoming the local business community to meet the team. Branch Manager Steve Martinez has been in the title and escrow business for 15 years, he said. He had just started work at REC Silicon when that company ran into financial difficulties at its Moses Lake plant. “They started taking voluntary layoffs,” Martinez said. “I had already started dabbling in (title and escrow) with my wife, and I liked it. I loved the work, so I started at the very bottom of the industry and worked my way up through the years.”

New Quincy park opens, splash pad to come
QUINCY — The playground, basketball court and cement bowl are all open at the new park on Sixth Avenue Northeast in Quincy, with a splash pad due to open before the end of June. “That park has been talked about for a lot of years, so it’s really cool to see it (open),” said Quincy City Council member Andrew Royer during the June 2 regular meeting. Quincy Recreation Director Russ Harrington said the splash pad must be inspected by the Washington Department of Health before it can be used, and that’s scheduled for the week of June 15. City employees also need some training on its use before it can open, he said, and that’s scheduled for the week of the inspection.
ACH Warriors reflect on another successful season
COULEE CITY — The Almira/Coulee-Hartline Warriors concluded the 2026 baseball season with a 15-8 overall record and went 8-1 in league. Patrick “Pat” McKenzie passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the age of 77. Pat was born on July 31, 1948, in Wenatchee, Washington, to Erma Violet West and William Lawrence McKenzie. He grew up in Moses Lake, where he developed the quick wit, independence and work ethic that would define him throughout his life. Some of his fondest childhood memories were spending summers at Lake Chelan with his Aunt Opal and Uncle Mac, and family, creating stories and memories that he would share for years to come. Pat was many things: a husband, father, grandfather, businessman, coach, mentor, problem-solver, fisherman, crossword enthusiast and dedicated friend. He was quick-witted, sarcastic, gregarious and fiercely protective of the people he loved. He often tried to play the tough guy, but anyone who knew him well knew that the act never lasted long. Beneath it was a generous heart and a deep love for family and friends.

For Moses Lake volleyballers, there’s no time off in summer
MOSES LAKE — With the academic year wrapping up, local high school sports are done for the summer as well. However, many programs like the Mavericks volleyball team gathered Monday for offseason workouts. “Today is our first summer workout with all the girls,” Head Coach Krystal Trammell said. “We bring in all the girls, returners, new, and get them into the system, and basically teach them the fundamentals, the skills, and work on the foundation.” While they can’t hold official practices, Trammell is allowed to host voluntary summer workouts which provide student athletes with an opportunity to work on their skills. According to her, about 75 players and counting have attended these workouts.

MOSES LAKE — It’s not talked about very much, but depression is a very real concern for seniors. “Aging is not always easy,” said Marisa Martinez, branch manager at Family Resource Home Care. “It’s not always pleasant, but it’s something that eventually has to happen.” About 15% of Americans 65 and older report having been diagnosed with a depressive disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Golf River, California — The University of Washington Huskies men’s varsity eight rowing team won the IRA National Championship Sunday afternoon with a comeback victory that took a full team effort. According to a release from UW athletics, this is the 22nd National Championship in program history and the 10th under Huskies Head Coach Michael Callahan. “That’s as good as it gets,” said Callahan. “I don’t know if I’ve ever coached a faster boat or a more cohesive crew. When you’re a coach, you want to see your guys put it all together in the biggest moments and that’s what they did.” As reported by Regatta Timing, a site that tracked the IRA Championship, during the final events, the UW Richards team took first with a time of 5:44.335 to beat Harvard by 0.683 and the UW Tasker team took first with a time of 5:37.493 to beat California by 1.059. The UW Martin team took second with a time of 5:43.612 and the UW Bosnes team took fourth with a time of 6:32.250.

Gasoline prices show spring surge, recent pullback across WA and U.S.
MOSES LAKE — Gasoline prices across Washington state, the nation, Grant County, and Adams County have followed a similar trajectory in the first five months of 2026: a steady climb through late winter and early spring, a peak in mid-May, and a modest decline heading into June, according to data from AAA. According to data compiled weekly since early January, prices began the year at relatively moderate levels before rising sharply through March and April. In Washington, the statewide average climbed from $3.84 per gallon on January 5 to a peak of $5.78 by May 18, marking an increase of nearly $2 per gallon in just over four months. Nationally, prices rose from $2.81 to $4.52 over the same period.

The fire at the Simplot – Columbia Basin processing facility, in the 2000 block of Road O Northeast, was reported at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Grant County Fire District 5 crews responded, but by the time they got there, the technology had done its work. “On our arrival, there was no smoke. The fire was out,” said Kyle Parker, captain with GCFD 5. Grant County Fire Marshal Nathan Poplawski said the fire started in a fryer that had not been cleaned properly during its previous production cycle.

MLCA class of 2026 closes the door on high school
MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake Christian Academy salutatorian SanTahna Ferguson said graduation was the start of something new – something a little daunting, even. “We're adults now, the future of our generation. It’s kind of crazy to think that we're adults now – I mean, some of us still panic when ordering food over the phone,” she said. Ferguson was one of five seniors to receive her diploma during graduation ceremonies Saturday. She said one of the things she will take with her from high school is the friendship of her classmates.
Wenatchee Road fire briefly threatens nearby buildings
MOSES LAKE — A fire of about an acre threatened some homes and outbuildings but was extinguished within about 90 minutes by Grant County Fire District 5 and Moses Lake Fire Department crews late Sunday morning. The fire, in the 4000 block of Wenatchee Drive Northeast, was in an empty field between several residences, some with outbuildings. The fire was reported at about 11:30 a.m., said Kyle Parker, GCFD 5 captain. Crews contained the fire to the field, but one outbuilding was destroyed, Parker said.

Lateef Ajani Olaniyan
1958 – 2026
Lateef Ajani Olaniyan, born in 1958, went home to be with the Lord on May 22, 2026. He is survived by his three children Michael Olaniyan, Hakeem Olaniyan, and Amirah Olaniyan, whom he loved deeply and was immensely proud of. Lateef was born in Omu-Aran, Nigeria, to Oyepeju and Jimoh Olaniyan. From an early age, he demonstrated a gift for science and a determination to pursue educational opportunities that would eventually take him across the world. That journey began in 1981, when he immigrated from Nigeria to California in pursuit of higher education. He earned an Associate Degree from the College of the Redwoods before continuing his academic journey at Idaho State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. He later earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Florida.

Burn restrictions take effect in Grant County as fire season arrives early
EPHRATA — An annual burn restriction is now in effect across unincorporated areas of Grant County, as local fire officials warn that an already active and unusually dry start to the season could lead to a challenging summer. Under county ordinance, outdoor burn restrictions automatically begin June 1 and remain in place through September 30 each year, limiting most types of open burning during the height of fire season. The restriction is part of the Grant County Fire Hazard Code and is intended to reduce human-caused wildfires during the driest and most dangerous months.

EPHRATA — A new Wyndham Microtel has officially opened its doors in Ephrata, offering travelers a modern place to stay while marking a major milestone for a local family behind the project. The 81-room hotel, located just off State Route 17 near Walmart, began accepting guests late last week – roughly two months ahead of its original schedule. Basin athletes compete at state track
MOSES LAKE — Athletes from schools all around the Columbia Basin competed in the state championships over the weekend with Ephrata, Moses Lake High School, Othello and Quincy competing in Tacoma and Almira/Coulee-Hartline, Lind-Ritzville, Moses Lake Christian Academy/Covenant Christian School, Royal, Soap Lake and Wahluke competing in Yakima. Connelly Park closed indefinitely after storm caused extensive damage
MOSES LAKE — Connelly Park will remain closed for the foreseeable future after a powerful windstorm swept through the area Thursday night, uprooting dozens of massive trees, damaging infrastructure and leaving park officials focused on safety and recovery. Initial estimates place the damage at approximately $50,000, largely due to cleanup costs and structural repairs, according to Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District General Manager Sam Castro. However, he is working alongside an assessor who may value the damage to be more, he said.

Huskies Luis Farias signs to Columbia Basin College
OTHELLO — Luis Farias from the Othello Huskies boys’ soccer team signed his letter of intent Thursday to join the men's soccer program at Columbia Basin College. While he was excited to make it official, Farias also felt it went deeper than that. “I feel like a signing like this may give other kids hope to see and look up to me and be a role model in a way, instead of all the other bad things out in the world,” he said. “I just want them to think of me and see a role model, and someone they could follow, and something they could do too, and even achieve more beyond what I have achieved.”

Wahluke finishes fourth in state tournament
FEDERAL WAY — The Wahluke Warriors finished their season Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Cedar Park Christian, which means they finish fourth in the 1A/2B state tournament. This came after a deep tournament run to the semifinals where they suffered a 1-0 loss to Meridian Friday. “It's really simple, the winner is going to be the one that puts (the goals) in, and we didn’t, they had one good opportunity and they finished. We paid the consequences,” Head Coach Cele Lopez said.
Samaritan makes money in April
MOSES LAKE — While revenues for Samaritan Healthcare are running behind budget projections for the first four months of the year, the hospital and clinics were in the black for the month of April. However, Samaritan has lost money for the year to date through the end of April.
Microsoft donates $200K to Quincy nonprofits
QUINCY — Twenty non-profit organizations in Quincy got a surprise Thursday evening, as Microsoft passed out checks for $10,000 each to further their work. “It couldn’t have come at a better time, because our big heritage barn is in terrible need of repainting,” said Quincy Valley Historical Society and Museum Director Harriet Weber. “That’s a big, big job.”
Barnes-Keller looks to continue his successful career in Wenatchee
QUINCY — After a successful senior season, Quincy Jackrabbits pitcher Ashton Barnes-Keller earned Second Team All-Conference honors and is planning to continue his pitching career with the Wenatchee Valley Knights. As the senior heads on to the next step in his career, he looks back on his long-time passion that has opened doors for his future. “I began at age four,” said Barnes-Keller. “After playing (baseball) a lot, it was always so fun. I knew it was going to be my favorite.”
