Soap Lake Soap Boix Derby set for Suds-N-Sun

SOAP LAKE — The annual Soap Box Derby is being held at 9 a.m. on July 4 as part of the Suds-N-Sun festival. The theme for the derby, along with the rest of the festival, will be based on the United States’ 250th year of independence.
“(We) just need kids to come out, race a few times and have a great time,” said Soap Lake Police Chief Patrick Canady, who is coordinating the event. “It doesn’t cost them anything, just some parent supervision and a little help with the race.”
The race will be taking place on Main Avenue in Soap Lake and features 10 soapbox-certified cars. The derby is open to ages 8-12 or to those who reach a certain weight requirement.
At least 10 participants will be needed to run the races. The event is completely free to enter.
Soap Lake’s Soapbox Derby has been a staple of the Suds-N-Sun festival for a few years now, starting with Soap Lake Police Chief Jim Doris, said Canady. This year Canady is looking forward to the opportunity to hold this event on Independence Day.
“I’m very patriotic,” said the chief. “I love my country, I love my community and its 250 years of independence.”
