Jesus tackles the tough questions

I am a parent of four children under the age of 8. Among other things, this means that from the moment I wake up, to the moment the last child falls asleep, I am being bombarded with questions. It seems like the questions never stop. If you answer one question, there’s two or three more right behind it. Most of the questions are pretty easy to answer, like, “Can I have something to eat?” or “What day is it today?” But sometimes they get tricky. For example, “Which is more powerful, a black bear or a bison?” And occasionally the questions are almost impossible to answer, like when my daughter asks, “Why did grandma die?”

Fresh News from MarDon

The fishing on Potholes Reservoir this spring has been amazing. Anglers have been throwing flipping jigs, senkos, creature baits, spinner baits and a variety of 3-to-5-inch grubs and many more. We have had an incredible frog bite especially with Spro Popper Frog and Lunkerhunt Frogg series. For the 34th year MarDon Resort has enjoyed hosting the Potholes Open Bass Tournament with weigh-in just under 3,000 pounds of largemouth and lmallmouth Bass at the scales. This was a new record, just ask Potholes Bass Club President Tom Tweed, who was weighmaster, how tired he was after weighing just under 3,000 pounds of bass.

The City of Moses Lake Police Department already has many qualified officers to take over as chief of police. It would be wise and great to hire a woman to be our next chief; however, the department has many great candidates within the department who would do an outstanding job for the City of Moses Lake. But it’s very important to hire a chief from within the department. Outsiders almost never work; people work better with those they know.

Extra canal will have positives, negatives

In 1920 the US Maritime Act of 1920 (called The JONES ACT), provides that vessels from another country can only go to one US port. Any other movement of cargo or passengers must be made on US built, US owned, US flagged, and US crewed vessel. Because modern ships are now at least twice the size, the Panama Canal was built to handle ships unloaded on the West Coast. Cargo and passengers were moved by truck, rail or US vessel. That helped build the shipping and freight businesses we have today. Mega West Coast ports employ thousands of longshoreman.

Local efforts needed to repeal bathroom bill

It’s time to stand up and send a message and rally together to protect our women and children, to keep our public restrooms and school locker rooms safe. You can do this by signing the petition to repeal the dangerous Open Bathroom Bill brought by Gov. Jay Inslee and the Human Rights Commission, who instituted this new law without legislative approval or a vote of the people. What’s the Bathroom Bill? It’s WAC 162-32, which affects public businesses like stores, gyms, and schools and allows any male who claims his gender identity or expression to be female, to enter and use a women’s restroom or public locker room. On May 25, JustWantPrivacy.org stated 318,698 signatures were needed by July 1 to put I-1515 on the ballot in November. You must be a registered voter to sign. This petition is not against transgender people, but about preserving privacy and safety from a law that enables criminal behavior. Will you stand up for your family and help collect signatures? For more information, visit JustWantPrivacy.org or fpiw.org. Call 509-989-2914 for petitions and voter registrations.

A quiche is just a quiche
May 25, 2016 6 a.m.

A quiche is just a quiche

A commonly made recipe in our house is quiche. It is easy to make up quickly and is adaptable to the ingredients you have on hand. For example, I was over at a friend’s house and decided that I would make these with chopped up chicken and apple sausage. Also, I made them without a crust, and in muffin tins for single serving size portions. The recipe I was working with had always called for adding flour with the cheese, then mixing it in, but I never found the results of using it worth the trouble, so I dropped the ingredient. The flour was likely supposed to help sop up part of the liquids from the melted cheese, but I felt it was also lightly masking the flavors.

Ask the Addict: Aren't most addicts born that way?

An emphatic no is the answer here to our first question from Cindy in Quincy. Addictions, addictive tendencies and addictive personalities are developed in life as a result of a whole host of factors: Childhood trauma (intense, repeated or both), parental behavior (modeling), peer pressure through modeling or desire for acceptance/approval, accidental discovery, legitimate medicine use for pain, sustained stress/pain and inability to cope, to name a few. Only on rare occasions is a person born with an addiction due to the mother’s use of drugs or medicine during pregnancy.

Trust God to handle your chaos
May 13, 2016 1 p.m.

Trust God to handle your chaos

God is an expert at dealing with chaos and brokenness. A dad was home one day when he heard a terrible crash in the kitchen. It was the shattering of glass that seemed to go on and on and on. He went running into the kitchen only to see his daughter standing barefoot in a sea of broken glass. She stood there bleeding and saying, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry Dad.” They had several shelves of glasses and cups that, like a domino effect, came down onto each other and fell off the wall. Glasses fell onto the granite counter top and shattered as they fell to the floor. And there stood his daughter, bleeding and barefoot saying, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”

Thanks to clean-up volunteers

On behalf of Vision 2020, I would like to thank you all for your help and cooperation with this year’s 14th annual Vision 2020 Citywide Clean-up. While the final tally of refuse collected is still being determined, our city streets, vacant lots and parking lots are much cleaner because of your help and the help of some 300-plus volunteers. The Porterhouse restaurant provided a delicious lunch for all following Saturday’s event. Lakeside Disposal did a great job with taking care of all waste collected, even helping unload the trucks as they arrived full of garbage. Several area organizations were involved in making this year’s clean-up a success. The Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce and the MLBA provided their support as they do every year. Donations of supplies were received from Ace Hardware, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Grocery Outlet, Walmart, Frito-Lay, Porterhouse Steakhouse, KBSN/KDRM Radio, the Columbia Basin Herald and iFiber One News.

Filling cupboards in time for summer

For some local youth whose families are struggling to make ends meet, this Saturday’s “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive comes at an opportune time. The last day of Moses Lake public schools is June 14. Kids relying on school-sponsored free and reduced lunch programs are at risk of having less food to eat this summer. To help bridge the gap between school nutrition programs and dwindling family budgets, we encourage you to scan your cupboards for non-perishable food to donate. The next step is to set aside the food for Saturday’s Letter Carriers Food Drive taking place in Moses Lake. On Saturday, just place the food in a bag by your mail box for pick-up.

This week matters in your child's life

You will have about 936 weeks from the time your child is born until he or she graduates from high school. It goes by fast. Your son or daughter is speeding through each phase of life faster and faster, and if you are not careful, you will miss it. You will only get 365 days to know your 3-year-old, and then they will be 4. You only get 52 weeks to know your 8-year-old, and then they will be 9. You only get 12 months to know your 13-year-old, and then they will be 14 (and you may never want to know them again as a 13-year-old). So don’t hurry through the present phase as if it is your enemy, embrace it and don’t miss it.

Washington state insults people

It is time for the State of Washington’s government to stop insulting the general population. Automated telephone answering systems have been used for more than a few years. They are set up to queue callers so calls are answered in order received. We don’t need being told “hold the line for next available operator” as if we had never reached an automated phone system previously in our entire lifetime. Having our time wasted listening repeatedly to messages is more than slightly annoying. The general population is not comprised of idiots.

My mother, Mrs. Minnie Norwood of Moses Lake, has always been the matriarch of my family. Through many sad and difficult times she has been the glue of the family. She would listen to my various philosophies on life, especially that my children have to respect their Sudanese and their rich Mississippi heritage. I have always liked celebrating black/African culture. Teaching my family their history was extremely important to me. The children’s dad was from Africa and they were part Nubian, so our lives were intertwined with African and American culture.
