Quincy rallies to stun Pullman in state opener 3-2

PULLMAN — Entering Tuesday’s first-round state tournament game against Quincy, Pullman had conceded one goal in its last nine matches.

Quincy scored three unanswered to pull off the upset on the road 3-2.

“We just started attacking and we adjusted a little,” head coach Arturo Guerrero said.

That adjustment, bringing up one more forward, allowed for more scoring chances that the Jacks took advantage of.

Francisco Alejandrez scored one goal in each half to even the game after Quincy had fallen behind 2-0. Fredy Ruiz put the Jacks ahead for good in the 60th minute.

“Whoever was going to prevail was going to be the team that wants it most,” Guerrero said.

Quincy will either play at Grandview or at Toppenish in the next round.

Tennis

Ephrata advances two to district finals

EPHRATA — Teighan Moore and Garner Sears will represent Ephrata in the finals of the District 5/6 2A Tennis Championships on the girls and boys singles bracket, respectively.

Moore picked up wins over Grandview’s Alexandra Gonzalez in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2 and Toppenish’s Nakoma Mesplie 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Sears will square off against East Valley’s Michael Manion in the boys singles championship match. Sears dropped only one game combined in the quarter and semifinals.

Othello’s Brean Tovar and Ephrata’s Jennie DeLeon are still alive in the consolation bracket. Diego Villarreal, of Othello, lost in the semifinals to Manion and dropped to the consolation bracket.

Othello’s Kylee Hawley and Zoee Roylance advanced to the district final in girls doubles. Quincy’s Natalie Thomsen and Rachel Faw dropped into the consolation bracket.

No. 2 seed Collin Freeman and Kyler Villarreal, out of Othello, moved into the boys doubles district final with a 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-0 win.

Ephrata has two boys doubles teams in the consolation bracket, while Quincy has one.

The final day of the district tournament is scheduled for Saturday, 10 a.m., at Ephrata.

Softball

Selah 17, Ephrata 1

SELAH — Ephrata was eliminated from the District 5/6 2A Softball Tournament after a 17-1 loss to Selah.

Selah advances to play Ellensburg in the district semifinals on Thursday. Ellensburg swept Selah on May 12.

Baseball

Warden litters CW2B all-league baseball team

Warden had eight selections on the Central Washington 2B South all-league team.

Zach Askin was Player of the Year, Tyson Yamane was Pitcher of the Year and Wade Visker was Catcher of the Year.

Askin and Yamane both made the first team, along with Drake Hansen and JR Delgado. Visker, Guillermo Gonzalez, Jon Rey Mast and Isaac Campos were named to the second team.

Soap Lake had three selections: Seth Holden, Brayden Winters and Colton Minoletti. Holden was first team, Winters was second team and Minoletti was honorable mention.

Warden begins its state tournament run Saturday, 1 p.m., at Eastmont against Toledo.

Boys golf

Royal’s Nelson Ramirez an alternate to state tournament

DESERT AIRE — Royal’s Nelson Ramirez will be an alternate to the State 1A Boys Golf Championship at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane.

Ramirez shot 96 and finished in a three-way tie for 14th. Tyler Dorsing carded a 107. Nick Baker, of Cle Elum, was the district champion with a score of 69.

On the girls’ side, Royal’s Lauren Pratt finished tied for 12th with a score of 113. Amanda Conger shot 131.

Highland’s Lucy Mitchum was first, scoring 72. Mitchum finished 12 strokes ahead of second place.
