Moses Lake boys soccer takes down Davis 2-1

MOSES LAKE — The chant went up even before the team charged onto the field to celebrate Tanner Hasse’s game-winning shot in the shootout.

“Eddie, Eddie, Eddie,” echoed throughout the stadium in recognition of Moses Lake goalkeeper Eddie Reyes’ stellar performance in the Chiefs 2-1 victory over Columbia Basin Big Nine-leading Davis on Friday night at Lions Field.

The big man came up big with eight saves, including two critical saves in the shootout to keep the Chiefs’ (5-6) district tournament hopes alive.

Miguel Segura went low to the left post to beat Davis keeper Luis Birrueta and tie the shootout at 3-3. Reyes, who had already made one save, dove to his right to make a second stop, this time smothering Luis Valle’s shot to set up the dramatics on Moses Lake Senior Night.

Hasse drove home the game-winner with a laser, low to the far post and the Chiefs handed Davis (8-3) just its third loss of the season

“It’s an amazing feeling. I just tried to stay calm (in the shootout). I look in their eyes, they’ll give me a clue eventually, and you just go with your gut,” Reyes said. “I could see it in their eyes which direction they were going to go and I reacted. This team is like family and I couldn’t let the seniors down on Senior Night.”

It was a big win for Moses Lake which is trying to hold onto the fifth slot in the Big Nine standings.

“This win tonight means a lot to this group, to this program and to our future,” Moses Lake coach Rian Allred said. “The reason it’s such a big deal is that group is something really, really special. The last couple of weeks we’ve really started to connect. We’ve had the ability to stay positive and poised even under pressure.”

The pressure mounted in the second half when Davis broke a scoreless match with a goal right after the intermission. Devyn Clark tied it up with a goal in the 60th minute, giving the Chiefs the energy boost they needed to close out regulation with the CBBN frontrunners. Reyes was a rock in the net, coming up with two big saves in overtime.

In the first extra period, the Davis push was right in his face as his defenders were flying all around the ball. The ball skipped off the crossbar. The Chiefs junior came up big again in the second overtime with a sliding save on a Valle shot to extend it into the shootout.

“Eddie gives us a lot of energy. He gives us a lot of reassurance that he’s going to do everything he can to keep the ball out of the net,” Hasse said.

Reyes won the coin flip to start the shootout and chose to take the net first. Samuel Rodriguez put Davis on the board with a low shot to the right post. Saul Maciel failed to convert and the Pirates took a 2-0 lead with their second shooter. Tyler Mullen got it started with a driving shot to make it 2-1.

“We’ve been in this situation before. Our mentality tonight was to finally put one of the top teams away and make a statement to the rest of the league we’re here for reals,” Mullen said.

Reyes made his first big save, knocking down Juan Mendoza’s shot to give the Chiefs a chance. It went 3-2 into Miguel Segura’s shot. The Moses Lake senior converted to tie it up at 3-3. Reyes made another big stop, setting up Hasse.

“I knew I was the sixth shooter. I knew from the second I got out there which way I was going to go,” Hasse said. “I knew my teammates would do everything they could to finish it before it came to me. But if I had the chance, I knew I was going to finish it.”
