ROYAL CITY — The Royal Golf Association’s first tournament of the season is just around the corner, and all golfers are encouraged to participate.

The RGA has declared this a critical year for the future of one of the best nine-hole layouts anywhere. While play has been down the past few years, costs of operation have risen.

Instead of a Spring Opener this year, the RGA is kicking off the season with the Open House Tournament on May 14. It is intended to focus the need for greater participation.

There will be free food, and a membership drive will be conducted. New memberships and renewals will be offered at discounted prices that day.

The entry fee for the four-man scramble will be $160 per team. Powered carts will be a separate charge.
