Chavez becomes first ML girls golfer to qualify for state in 28 years

WENATCHEE — For nearly three decades, Moses Lake wasn’t represented at the girls golf state championship.

That changed when Mikayla Chavez was able to crack the top eight at the District 6 Tournament Championship held at Three Lakes Golf Course in Wenatchee, tying for fifth place with a score of 94. Chavez became the first girls golfer from Moses Lake to qualify for state in 28 years.

Overall, Moses Lake finished third with 110 points and Wenatchee was crowned district champions with 159 points. Davis’ Cassie Kim was the individual medalist, carding a 76.

Moses Lake’s Charley Sanislo scored 102, Payton Erdmann carded 107, Kerisa Sanislo notched 123 and Jaimyn Law recorded 132.

The state championships is held May 24 and 25 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.


Softball

Warden’s Aaliyah Enriquez named WIAA Athlete of the Week

WARDEN — Warden’s Aaliyah Enriquez was recognized as a Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Athlete of the Week for her performance against Mabton.

Enriquez pitched her fifth no-hitter of the season against Mabton and struck out all but one batter. From the plate, she batted 4-for6 with two doubles, five RBI and seven runs scored.

More, Enriquez followed that performance with a perfect game against White Swan.

Warden opens district tournament play Saturday, 1 p.m., in Ephrata as the Central Washington 2B South division’s No. 1 seed.


Boys soccer

Quincy 4, Toppenish 3

TOPPENISH — Quincy won a back-and-forth district semifinal game at Toppenish 4-3.

With the win, Quincy qualified for the state tournament and will play Grandview for the district championship on Thursday.

Tied 1-1 at the half, the final 40 minutes featured a combined five goals.

Kevin Rios scored twice in the second half.


Baseball

East Valley 8, Ephrata 0

YAKIMA — Ephrata’s bats were silenced for the second straight district playoff game.

The Tigers managed only two hits in an 8-0 loss to East Valley.

Parker Ball and Austin Webb had one hit each.

East Valley pulled away after a five-run second inning. The Red Devils tacked on one run in the fourth inning and two in the sixth.

Lucas Juarez drove in three runs and pitched six scoreless innings.

Gunnar Falstad lasted 1 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss.

Ephrata will travel to the No. 1 team out of the Great Norther League on May 14 for a chance at a state tournament berth.

Davis 5, Moses Lake 3

YAKIMA — Davis scored twice in the fifth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie with Moses Lake.

The Pirates hung on to win 5-3 in their district play-in, ending the Chiefs’ season.

Davis jumped on Moses Lake starter Jason Cole early with three runs in the first inning.

However, Moses Lake evened the game with three runs in the second.

Jonathan Imperial broke the tie with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

Devin Moos had one hit and one RBI for the Chiefs.
