Reader: New trees too expensive

I agree with the chiding of the Moses Lake City Council. I realize the downtown area needs beauty and safe sidewalks, but spending $160,000 on just trees, please! Wasn't it not long ago funding to maintain flower pots was a problem? What good are new trees/safe sidewalks if you can't walk shop downtown? I spend all my time finding a place to park and/or dodging traffic from parked cars pulling out into my lane of travel. I would love to walk and shop! In the 70s and 80s we parked in one spot and took our children shopping. Now! Well you know. Only at places with large parking lots, where you can go to Big Lots, Big 5 and get a Big Mac and never move your car!

The winter season got off to a slower than usual start this season, largely due to warm water well into December. I have been getting some reports of improved fishing on the reservoir, and as I reported a while back, gave it a try myself.

Gloyd Seeps provides hunting opportunities

Another productive hunting spot near Moses Lake is near the pioneer town of Gloyd. Take Stratford Road north out of Moses Lake to Road 12. Take a left on Road 12 and you should be headed west. Drive past the Block 40 Clubhouse and other houses. Eventually the paved road will turn to gravel, but continue due west. Road 12 makes a turn to the right or north, but before turning park in one of the two parking lots near this spot. There are some trees to the southwest of these parking lots. I have shot a fair share of pheasants around those trees and in the brush of the area. Drive northwest on Road 12 when back in the vehicle. At the end of the road is a barrier and parking lot. From here walk north and west to Magpie Lake, a long and narrow lake which is capable of hiding ducks along the shoreline.

Reader endorses Skaug for MLIRD board

Over the last few years I have progressively become more aware of problems that our Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District have. In the last year the MLIRD is improving, but still needs to continue in the right direction. There are so many areas that needs to be address that the choice of the MLIRD director needs to be carefully considered. Moses Lake needs excellent leadership in the area of MLIRD directors. A three board director format is sound, as long as excellent directors are elected.

Reader questions Kernan's claims

Ken Kernan says he will bring balance to MLIRD. Ken was director of Ron Covey's campaign last year. Does Ken ignore his own partisanship? Ken also raises the issue of challenge to our water right. Who would challenge our 80-year-old water right and dry up more than 4,000 acres within the district? Ken needs to state names and present facts, less he be accused of fear-mongering.

Reader favors expanded MLIRD board

As I watch this election approach I'm struck by several things. First, we have a board president who conducts meetings like Moe of the three stooges, and that's not being fair to the Moe. On the other side, we have a board director who is crazy in love with spending other people's money, which it turns out may have been taxed illegally. Finally, we have a guy who is an absolute sock puppet for the hyperactive Moe, and who rubberstamps every moronic idea that Moe comes up with.

Person of the Year

It has come to my attention that Time Magazine has nominated many interesting people to be "Time Person of the Year." Many of the TV pundits are having fun trying to decide who it should be. Of course many are saying it should be Barack Hussein Obama. I would argue that is too easy. It should be four people who represent what America has become and allowed for Obama to be re-elected in this miserable economy. First should be Sandra Fluke, that 32 year old poster child for the Democrats. She is still going to college on the taxpayers dime and has the audacity to ask that we pay for all of her birth control too! Second should be that well known lady from Cleveland, the "Obamaphone lady." She screamed on her YouTube video how we needed to keep Obama because he provided all the welfare people with free phones! Third should be "the illegal immigrant." We are told that the Hispanic vote went to Obama because he supports amnesty and government handouts for illegal immigrants. Fourth should be Richard Trumpka, the President of the AFL-CIO. He and his union die hards supplied the intimidation and voter fraud needed in any close election. As you can see it really is time for four Persons of the Year!

Reader endorses Skaug for MLIRD board

I would like to put in my two cents' worth of knowledge on the two candidates that are running for the director position at the MLIRD. Ken Kernan has experience on how to work within the guidelines of a government entity. David Skaug has experience on how to work in a private enterprise. It seems that some of the problems that have risen within the MLIRD stem from the fact that they have free rein over our tax dollars, spending without the kind of oversight that is required to keep spending and salaries in check with the rest of us. Why is it so hard to get answers out of the staff? What do they have to hide?

Reader endorses Kernan in MLIRD election

Ken Kernan has attended 80 percent of MLIRD meetings compared to David Skaug's handful. Ken has never been a "yes" man to anyone as proven by his independent thinking, by a career of leadership and fiscal responsibility at a governmental level, and by the respect he receives. Ken has worked with inter-local agencies for years and will bring that expertise to his position as an MLIRD director. Ken has his facts about MLIRD straight and is not taking anyone's word for them. Ken understands the taxing authority of MLIRD . Ken Kernan understands the aggressive weed control program that is now in place and approved by state and federal agencies. He knows the dredge is working well after changes made by district management and staff. He also knows that hydraulic dredging is the only approved and permit able method to remove the sediment in our lake, unlike others who think the district should spend more of rate payer money to evaluate what is permit able.

I am writing this in support of our friend Ken Kernan for MLIRD Director. My husband and I have known Ken and Karen Kernan since we moved to Moses Lake almost 10 years ago. We consider them our "Moses Lake mom and dad." We know, and have seen firsthand, how passionate Ken is about the lake and what it provides for this community, and he wants to preserve and improve it! This passion is his motivation for seeking this position and nothing else. Ken is an honest and reasonable person, and he is knowledgeable of the issues and limitations we are experiencing with the current Board of Directors. He recognizes that the recreational value of our lake is being threatened, and wants to make a change to prevent that. For this, we trust that Ken Kernan is the best candidate for this position and hope you will give him your vote on Dec. 11.

Lake, water rights big issues in MLIRD race

I am writing this letter in support of Ken Kernan for the position of director of the MLIRD. Two of the most important assests our community has to offer are the lake and our water rights. I live on the lake, and this year the aquatic weeds were so thick we could not swim or fish off our dock. This is the worst I have seen the lake in years.

Reader supports Skaug for MLIRD board

The name Skaug has been a part of the Moses Lake community as long as it has been known as Moses Lake, when we still had dirt streets and board sidewalks. Otto Skaug was a past Mayor of Moses Lake and had a glass business on third Avenue. I'm reminded of Otto when I look at a yardstick which he gave out years ago with the phone number of 89. The Skaug family has helped build Moses Lake into what it is today. Like Otto, his three sons, Howard, Eric and David have definitely inherited the ability to survive in business and to look to the future. David would bring the same business sense and community spirit to the MLIRD board. Having grown up in Moses Lake David knows the economic and recreational value of this lake to the community. David will protect our lake and your pocketbook to the best of his ability. Please vote David Skaug for MLIRD board member.
