Farewell to Commissioner Allred

| December 21, 2012 5:00 AM

Grant PUD Commissioner Randy Allred's 11 years of service as a board member should be acknowledged.

Allred, 62, a Royal City farmer, died Dec. 14 of cancer, leaving his term to be filled by Larry Schaapman, a commission appointee from Quincy.

Allred's approach to public service was no-nonsense and straightforward. He had a way of breaking through the utility's government and technical speak that was refreshing and down-to-earth to those attending commission meetings.

In the commission meetings covered by the Columbia Basin Herald, he asked the tough questions of staff and fellow commissioners and made himself available to answer the newspaper's inquiries. He wasn't one to avoid the press or confrontation and for that, we are grateful.

From our observations, Allred spoke from the heart in commission meetings and worked in the best interests of Grant PUD's ratepayers. Doing so required him to balance a variety of interests and demands from residential, industrial and agricultural customers. We believe he worked to accomplish the district's goals to the best of his ability, bringing his farming and small business background to commission discussions.

We wish Schaapman, Allred's replacement, the best of luck as he adjusts to his new role as a PUD commissioner. And we extend our condolences to the Allred family as they deal with their loss.
