Tips to help you stay out of the ditch

MOSES LAKE - Winter weather has arrived and snow covered roads have made driving conditions difficult throughout central Washington.

Numerous accidents and vehicles stuck along roadways have been reported since the snow began falling earlier this week. At least 10 weather-related vehicle incidents were reported in Grant County on Christmas day alone, according to local law enforcement agencies. The Moses Lake Public Works Department has kept major streets as clear as possible, but many side roads are still covered with snow. All major streets are first priority for snow removal.

Driving conditions should improve as little snow is expected in the next week, according to the Weather Channel's website. Roads could remain icy as temperatures remain at or below freezing around Moses Lake.

The WSDOT has advised drivers to decrease vehicle speed on hazardous roads and leave plenty of space between other vehicles. Make sure to accelerate and brake slowly to avoid sliding and do not use cruise control in any winter conditions. Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles do not stop better on ice. When driving behind a snowplow, remember the driver has limited field of vision and be sure it is clear before passing.
