County solid waste will take your old antifreeze

EPHRATA – If you have used antifreeze sitting around in your garage and don't know what to do with it, there is a disposal opportunity in Grant County.

Grant County Solid Waste offers a free year-around collection of used antifreeze for households at the Ephrata Landfill. Residents may bring up to five gallons per week during normal hours of operation.

“This collection is for antifreeze generated from households only, not from farmers or businesses,” Solid Waste's Joan Melvin said.

The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ethylene glycol antifreeze is poisonous to humans and animals if ingested. It should be stored in closed containers out of their reach.

“Animals and small children may want to drink antifreeze because of its sweet smell,” Melvin said.

Antifreeze contaminated with oil or any other substance cannot be recycled at the Ephrata Landfill, Melvin noted. It must instead be brought to a hazardous waste collection event.
