MATTAWA - No matter what else happens, Wahluke High School already has a good season going in boys basketball.

Posting the first 2-0 start in several years, the Warriors knocked off Kittitas, 71-48, and Goldendale, 53-49, last week.

"These were two great home wins for us. The crowds were awesome for both nights," coach Cody Marlow said.

Next up for the Warriors are five road games. The first will be at Quincy tonight.

Two key plays at the end of the game sealed the victory over Goldendale, a top class 1A program. Alex Chiprez secured a loose ball on a long rebound, and Tyus Squeochs hit two free throws.

The Warriors were led by Oscar Onofre with 16 points. Librado Barajas had nine, Dario Prudente seven, Collin Ahmann six, Squeochs six Alan Caro five, Saul Ramos two and Chiprez two.

"This was a big test for our young team," Marlow said. "Goldendale has been very good in the past and always competes at a high level. Not only that. They were really big."

Marlow noted his boys were intimidated at the outset and fell behind quickly. Once their nerves settled, they started to come back.

The score was tied at half-time and after three quarters. Wahluke won the fourth period, 16-12.

"It was a battle," Marlow said.

The Kittitas contest went easier. Wahluke took command with a 21-10 second period and closed the game with a 21-10 fourth quarter.

The Warriors were led by Onofre with 21 points and eight assists. Alan Caro added 16 points and seven rebounds.

Other scorers were the freshman Ahmann with five, Barajas with eight, Ramos with nine, Gabino Abarca with six, Jose Espindola with two and Prudente with four.

"This was a great win for us to start off with," Marlow said. "We were able to sustain a high tempo for most of the game. All of the players contributed in some manner on the win."
