Two readers profile MLIRD candidates

| December 7, 2012 5:00 AM

After attending the MLIRD forum last week, there appear to be two very different candidates running for the MLIRD Board of Directors.

On several important issues they do agree. Both candidates appreciate our lake, and both agree that cutting the assessment rate in half is not a viable option at this time.

More striking, however, are the differences between the two candidates.

One candidate's position appears to be based on disinformation while the other candidate regularly attends MLIRD meetings and understands what the real issues are.

One candidate believes in looking to Olympia while the other candidate believes in working at the local level. One candidate wants to micromanage the General Manager while the other candidate believes in the GM's ability to do the job even under incredibly difficult circumstances.

One candidate thinks "The lake is fine!" and "No matter what we do, we can't control it", while the other candidate truly understands the hard work the MLIRD has done, and needs to continue to do, to keep our lake vibrant.

One candidate didn't appear to be concerned when asked about the current chairman's rush to spend $362,000 on a piece of land that will need tens of thousands more dollars of clean-up.

The other candidate realizes that the MLIRD already has more than enough land for its purposes. One candidate claimed to have no knowledge of the recently ordered $16,000 special audit, but said he would, "Absolutely have one every year if necessary".

The other candidate knew this special audit was a witch hunt that found nothing wrong.

Finally, only one candidate seems to be interested in forming productive relationships with city and state agencies and in finding solutions that benefit the lake, the community, and our economy- not only now but for future generations. Please support Ken Kernan.
