MOSES LAKE - While some people celebrate the new year with noisemakers and resolutions, others welcome it in more extreme ways.

The Grant County Animal Outreach will hold its annual Polar Bear Plunge on Jan. 1 at Cascade Park for residents to ring in 2013 with a dip in the lake's chilly waters.

"It's just a fun event to do, and I love watching it every year," said Carmen Derting of the Grant County Animal Outreach.

Derting said that about 200 people attended the 2012 plunge, although not everyone jumped in.

"It was about 40 degrees last year, and I almost jumped in," said Derting.

For those willing to brave the cold water, the event starts promptly at noon.

Derting said there will be hot chocolate, tea and snacks available for participants.

There will also be a vehicle for people to warm up in after the plunge.

Derting said the animal outreach group will also be accepting donations.

"People come and bring their dogs, and it's just a lot of fun," said Derting.
