Research Suggests More Planning Needed

(NAPSI)—About 10,000 baby boomers retire every day across America but research from the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) has found they are losing confidence in their ability to attain financial security during their retirement years. A 2015 study by the IRI found that only 27 percent of boomers are highly confident their savings will last throughout retirement. This is the lowest level since 2011, when this annual study began.

With an average price of $4,500 for the most advanced procedure, many people interested in LASIK are often challenged to find a way to pay for it. Here are a few suggestions from the American Refractive Surgery Council:

Fresh News from Mardon

Why wait for the April 1 opener when limits are being caught right now? As recent as yesterday limits of nice rainbows have been coming out of the Seep Lakes. The weather in early March always seems to be irregular but the trout fishing this time of year can be excellent. This spring a number of the year-round Seep Lakes have been kicking out quality trout, most notably Upper Goose, Blythe and Corral Lakes. Goose has been the hands-down best producer with relatively quick limits in the 14- to 16-inch range. Blythe and Corral have been producing occasional limits with some really nice 18-plus-inch fish mixed in, some running in the five- and six-pound range. All three of these bodies of water have easy access and adequate boat ramps. The best technique has been still fishing with bait.

Pitch in and keep Quincy clean

Quincy’s highways are littered with trash because people are getting careless when it comes to their trash ending up in the trash can. I think people should be fined and caught for their wrongdoing. The police aren’t really sitting there to catch them littering. How are they supposed to know who is doing it? And the people who have the highway piece adopted aren’t cleaning their part of the highway. The trash is making Quincy look gross and Quincy is a really pretty place. When people are throwing their trash out of their car windows they are polluting our planet and they can kill an animal when that animal mistakes it for food. They will never know if the poor animal is gone or not. Not all the trash you throw out is decomposable and when the people who adopted that part of the highway aren’t doing their job it doesn’t help. When they do clean then they leave their trash bags on the side of the road it doesn’t help much either. The trash trucks also spill trash out of their trucks and make it look worse. I think people should do their jobs.

The law applies to everybody

When a Donald Trump supporter broke the law and assaulted a protester for practicing his Constitutional right, that law-breaking supporter of Donald Trump made Hillary Clinton the next president of the United States of America. You can’t assault people; it’s against the law. You can’t oppress people; it’s immoral. We’re the United States of America, not the Divided States of America. No one is above the law in America; we’re all under the law. Congratulations, Hillary Clinton.

The city of Moses Lake is blessed in a lot of ways, and one of those is the lake that it’s named for. Seen from above, it glitters like a jewel in the yellow-brown central Washington landscape. Corn your own beef for St. Paddy's

I recently butchered my own beef and managed to save the brisket. Yes, what I did takes far more effort than getting a prepackaged corned beef brisket, on sale seemingly everywhere at the moment. Corned beef is beef brisket cured in a seasoned brine. The term “corned” beef comes from the English use of the word “corn,” meaning any small particle, such as a grain of salt.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced the closure of the steelhead season on three locations in our region. Now closed to fishing is the main stem Columbia River from the Highway 173 Bridge at Brewster to 400 feet below Chief Joseph Dam. The Okanogan River from the mouth to the Highway 97 Bridge in Oroville is now closed as is the Similkameen River from the mouth to 400 feet below Enloe Dam. These closures were made to minimize impacts on spawning steelhead. Steelhead fishing remains open on the Columbia River from Rock Island Dam to the powerlines crossing the river at Daroga State Park, the Wenatchee River from the mouth to 400 feet below Tumwater Dam, the Icicle River from the mouth to 500 feet downstream of the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Barrier Dam, and the Entiat River from the mouth to approximately a half-mile upstream. All the rules pertaining to steelhead fishing are still in effect. Please visit the department’s web site and read the official news release for all the details on these rule changes.

With 61-degree temperatures a a few weeks ago we are seeing a different type of spawn this year. Gary Roach, a professional walleye fisherman from Minnesota, taught us in 1983 that walleye spawn on the face of O’Sullivan at 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Each year in the MarDon tackle shop we see some interesting yet unanswered questions on walleye spawn. Fishers bring in walleye weighing 7 pounds from seven feet of water in Crab Creek near the power line boat launch that are spawning.

More respect for the law means fewer people in jail

Democrat candidate Bernie Sanders keeps complaining, stating that the police have too many people in jail in America. Well, Bernie, the police don’t have people in jail; people put themselves in jail by breaking and violating the law. No one is above the law, and if you break the law, you put yourself in jail. Let’s stop blaming the police for our responsibility of being law-abiding citizens.

Keep Guantanamo under US control

As the Grant County Republican Central Committee, we wish to express our grave concern over the possibility of our nation’s base and detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba being closed and returned to the control of the Cuban government. In the near future, President Barack Obama will be making a trip to the nation of Cuba and there is deep suspicion that he and his administration may attempt to circumvent Congress and make an agreement with Cuba to vacate that facility. We call upon Congress to pass appropriate legislation immediately to prevent this possible action and force this administration to adhere to the spirit of the treaty that gives the United States of America control of that facility. We understand the aforementioned treaty gives the U.S. control of the Guantanamo Bay base and detention center in perpetuity.

Fresh News from MarDon

Once again this year the Potholes Recreation Area is experiencing an early spring! Walleye action continues using blade bait, whistle jigs with worms, spinners and crawlers. One area that has been producing walleye is near Frenchman’s Wasteway where it enters Potholes Reservoir in 35 feet of water. With surface water temperature up to 51 degrees some largemouth are starting to show in Winchester Wasteway area. Largemouth Bass of five pounds, eight ounces have already been caught and released. Flipping jigs and grubs are working with our better days. Smallmouth action is starting in the Lind Coulee area to four pounds, caught and released. We have a new spinner bait that has been producing some fine smallmouth, the Johnson Spinner Bait, plus the Strike King Terminator spinner bait.

If our workweek ever needed a hero, thank goodness there's Super Tuesday

There's a lot of truth in pastors' columns

I truly enjoy reading the insights of our pastors in each Friday’s Columbia Basin Herald. Each one has information that is helpful in our relationship with our Lord. Recent articles on forgiveness, having a servant’s heart, grace and etcetera. All of these have a distinct place in each of our lives to establish righteousness.
