MATTAWA — The Mattawa City Council acted quickly to fill its vacant seat at last week’s meeting, adding a man respected in the community for commitment, work ethic and forward thinking.

Sun Hwang is the owner of Red Apple Market, the Shell service station and mini mart and rental housing in the community. He wrote a letter to the city requesting consideration.

According to City Clerk Robin Newcomb, the Council had up to 90 days to fill the seat after vacating it earlier this month. It chose to act quickly after it read about Hwang’s interest.

“They all liked him,” said customer service clerk Jazmin Calvario, who sat in on the meeting for Newcomb.

In other business, the Council approved the contract between the city and Grant County PUD for a PUD bill pay station at city hall.

The city was paid $24,000 yearly under the old contract. It will received $30,000 under the new deal.
