Kiyo Osumi

October 24, 1918 – March 22, 2016

Kiyo Osumi, 97, longtime Moses Lake resident, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Columbia Crest Care Center. Kiyo was born Oct. 24, 1918 in Toppenish, Wash., first child of eight to Frank and Tomi Konishi. She graduated from Toppenish High School in 1936, also beauty school in Seattle. She married Ned Osumi on April 19, 1942 in Yakima, Wash. They farmed in Wapato until the outbreak of World War II. They were evacuated to Hart Mountain, Wyo., then relocated to Spokane, Wash. In 1944 they moved to Moses Lake and farmed in Mae Valley and the O’Sullivan Dam areas. Kiyo was very active in the Nisei Women’s Club, serving as president for many years. She enjoyed bowling leagues, golfing, gardening and crafts of all sorts. After Ned passed in 1988, Kiyo traveled and golfed with her good friend Lillian Tokunaga.

Ned and Kiyo had one son Steve Osumi (Reno, Nev.); two daughters both in Moses Lake, Lynn Hulbert (Terry) and Irene Osumi (Loye Marchant); two grandsons, Kevin and Derek Hulbert; two great-grandchildren, Gregory and Natalie and one great-great-grandchild, Hayden. Kiyo is survived by her sisters Miyo Koba, Margie Hattori, Fumi Nakamura and Janice Bloom. She also will be missed by numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by husband Ned, brothers Joe and Ich Konishi, and sister Yuri Kikuchi.
