Eddie Reyes leads Moses Lake to shootout win

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake’s faux shootout with Lewis and Clark last week seemed like a footnote after a 5-0 loss.

However, it provided valuable practice — especially for goalie Eddie Reyes.

Deadlocked 1-1 after 90 minutes, Moses Lake’s game against West Valley moved to a shootout and Reyes seized his moment. The junior saved two shots — a third was airmailed over the crossbar — and the Chiefs made all three attempts, winning 2-1.

“A lot of keepers feel more nervous in penalty kicks, but my key is just staying calm,” Reyes said. “That’s pretty much all I do, is just stay calm. Don’t let the nerves get to you.”

It was an atonement for a first-half mistake that allowed West Valley to grab the lead in the 11th minute.

The Rams played the ball from the 30-yard line into the box that took a big bounce. Reyes was late coming out and Simon Estifanos connected on a header.

Reyes made up for his late reaction with decisive moves during the shootout.

Up against Austin Stromme, Reyes began moving left before jolting back right to make a diving save.

“It was phenomenal,” head coach Rian Allred said. “It was really, really cool to see our keeper perform at that level. It’s really good for him. He’s really needed that as a boost.”

Next, Estifanos’ kick to Reyes’ left was knocked down. Sensing Moses Lake’s goalie couldn’t be beaten from side to side, Noah Zepeda tried to go over the top, but his offering sailed high above the cross bar.

“I feel like he (Zepeda) got nervous knowing that if he makes it or misses it (his shot) it’s what causes the game (to be over),” Reyes said.

Erik Vega scored Moses Lake’s lone goal in regulation, following a rebound on an attempt by Anthony Cortez.

Due to tight officiating, the Chiefs had several runs called back on offsides. Cortez and Miguel Segura voiced their displeasure, receiving yellow cards in the process.

“That’s something we’ve got to adjust to and adapt to, but it was fantastic to see our guys gut it out,” Allred said.

Quincy 5, Ellensburg 0

ELLENSBURG — Fredy Ruiz recorded a hat trick and Quincy beat Ellensburg 5-0.

“It wasn’t easy, but our guys worked hard,” head coach Arturo Guerrero said. “We settled and scored in the 14th minute and went from there.”

Quincy goalie Johan Farias saved a penalty kick to preserve the shut out.

Quincy hosts Othello in a game between two unbeaten teams Saturday at noon.

Othello 5, Selah 2

SELAH — Othello assisted on all five goals in a 5-2 win over Selah.

Isai Zuniga and Arvin Arvizu scored two goals each.

Reese Jones notched his fifth goal in four games and also recorded an assist.

“As a defensive mid(fielder) that’s pretty impressive,” head coach Bernie Garza said.

Bernie Garza Jr. had three assists and Chris Alfaro had one.

Othello led 4-0 late before Selah scored twice in the final 10 minutes.

Prosser 3, Ephrata 1

EPHRATA — Ephrata was edged by Prosser 3-1.

Ephrata hosts Wapato Saturday at noon.

Royal 8, Kiona-Benton 1

ROYAL CITY — Despite playing in front of sun and wind, Royal led 3-1 at halftime and beat Kiona-Benton 8-1.

“We struggled a bit in the first half with the sun and wind in our face, but second half we found more success in front of goal,” head coach Jens Jensen said. “Ki-Be had a much larger group of players this year, which could mean good things for their future success.”

Alex Contreras notched a hat trick for the Knights. Jose Ponce and Oscar Castro scored twice. Michael Rojas found the back of the net once.

Connell 4, Warden 0

CONNELL — Warden stepped up to face Class 1A Connell on the road and lost 4-0.

Warden hosts Wahluke Thursday at 4 p.m.
