A newspaper is the fabric of a community. Big stories, features, weddings, births and deaths are chronicled for all to see and remember. It’s easy to take a newspaper for granted, just for the simple reason that it’s always been there, providing readers with stories about their community and even fodder for coffee hour. Once it’s gone, the pieces that made a publication great are difficult to recover.

It's time for Hillary Clinton to be president

Mark my words: Donald Trump will never be president of this blessed United States of America. He’s a selfish, unwise, angry man. Plus he blew his chance of being president when he called all Mexicans rapists and drug dealers, which is defamation of character and slander. Mexican people are God’s people too, and they work hard and contribute to the U.S. economy more than anyone realizes. We’re the United States of America and Donald Trump is a divider. If he was president he would bully and provoke other countries into war, putting the U.S. in danger.

No man's land: Reflections on being homeless

Reflections

While most sleep, many lonely human lives wander the land in search for food and shelter. Roaming the dark wet streets with no place to go and no money to live on. Living under the raindrops, scorching sun, falling leaves, and freezing flakes. Living on a dollar and counting change. Living vigilantly and passing by the wealthy every day. Gazing in hopes that one day, maybe I can make it out of the gutter. I can get a job, find a wife, raise kids and live happy someday. There are many reasons why a person may become homeless at some point of time in their life. It can be from lack of work, getting behind on bills, and an eviction notice. A lot of the time you see reasons like not wanting to work, being addicted to drugs and burning every bridge connected to family and friends. Sometimes it is because of disability, no transportation, just can’t work, or no family around to help. Some people need to reach the bottom of the barrel, engulfed in regret and sorrow, to wake up and succeed in life. The word homeless means so much more than just not having a home.

Grant County Gourmet: Try these ideas for a more flavorful salmon

Grant County Gourmet

I wanted to try a different approach to cooking a salmon fillet the other day that worked out really well. Instead of just baking it (or grilling it), I thought I would top it with a sauce while it was baking, in order to get the sauce to dry out and brown lightly, before the fish was cooked through and dried out. The sauce was unique in that I placed a large heirloom tomato that I had cored and peeled into the food processor and then whipped it into a liquid. I added a little bit of salt and pepper to taste, along with about 1/3 of a cup of mayonnaise. I then spooned it onto the fish. The sauce was quite slack, so after about 5 minutes of baking at 350 degrees, I reapplied the sauce. I did this procedure twice more before the salmon was done. Part of the meal was some baked zucchini, which also got the sauce treatment, along with a baked potato. After the baking process was done, extra sauce was provided for each plate, which I used solely for topping the potato. The tomato flavor in the uncooked sauce was amazing. The ripe tomato flavor was strong, yet not overpowering, and clearly was saying we were in the middle of summer.

Jesus uses adversity to grow our faith

During our last Sunday service I delivered a message about having faith in Christ. As I sit and contemplate the state of our society and country it became troubling to me, until I was moved to read the scripture on when Jesus walked on the water. As I read Matthew 14:22-33 my worry soon turned to joy. Three distinct points soon became apparent to me as I started to write my Sunday sermon. First, I was reminded that God always knows where we are at and when we are in trouble. Second was that he has the ability to overcome any obstacle to reach us. And finally that he has complete control over his creation.

Love

Thank you Pastors Skip and Gale for your article in the Herald last Friday. You chose a topic that is not only very deep but also at the very core of the Christian walk. Scriptures teach there are different types of love. Love is all inclusive but it is also evasive. Some of these loves are inherently human but the one we need to seek is agape love. Agape love comes through the power of the Holy Spirit. This love is all inclusive, that is He loves all of mankind but in order for us to individually receive His agape love we must submit to His will. An easier way to understand this is, we trade our human will and personal desires for God’s will and His desires for us. When we submit our will to God’s will we receive the indwelling Holy Spirit and along with it, God’s love to empower us to love unconditionally. This love empowers us to love the unlovable and to forgive the unforgivable.

Ms. Wyman has managed 100 elections over the past 23 years. Her opponent doesn’t understand the office at all, and is a former Seattle City Councilmember/activist. Excessive force by police is a widespread problem

All lives matter. Our laws need to be changed, not just to investigate police shootings butt those officers that use excessive force on citizens. This is bigger than one could imagine, but it was only a matter of time for the injustice of our nation ignoring racial problems in our police force and the system of our courts.

Thanks to firefighters and neighbors for lifesaving response

Sunday night, July 3, there was a huge brush fire off Division Street and Nelson Road in Moses Lake. I am so appreciative of the efforts of the Moses Lake Fire Department and Grant County Fire District No. 5 who came so quickly with personnel and equipment to fight the fire and get it under control. There were no injuries nor significant property loss. How very fortunate for all of us that were involved. I will forever be grateful for the skill of all these people and to all the neighbors who pitched in to help. I am especially thankful to the person(s) who banged on my door shouting, “Get out! Get out!” I do not know your name(s) but I need to let you know that I will forever be indebted to you. I am saddened to read in the Herald that fireworks were possibly the cause. When will we learn that no fireworks are safe? Mine is a story that had the best of all endings under the circumstances. No injuries, minimal property loss; but it could have been so much worse. There are no words that can express my thanks to everyone who helped to resolve this incident with such positive outcomes. Thank you!

Apricot jam

Apricot season is still in full swing here. We have bowls and containers seemingly all over the kitchen. We almost have a tree of our own, but it has produced small walnut-sized specimens this year, and even yet they are not quite ripe. We’ve picked from neighborhood trees in a few towns now, and have used them in all sorts of recipes. We’ve dried a bunch, made up a curd (after being inspired by making curd out of other fruits last week), made up an apricot-infused alcohol, and, of course, eaten a bunch fresh. Now time for jam.

Do you want to be great? Hint: it starts with love

Jesus gave us a description of greatness in Matthew 20:25-28 (New Living Translation), when he said, “But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Firefighters deserve our appreciation

With fire season at its peak, local firefighters are making sacrifices to keep us safe. Summer fires in particular seem to happen on nights and weekends, when people are out having fun with friends and family. A few recent fires are stark reminders of how quickly flames can spread, destroy land and threaten homes. Late Monday night, Grant County Fire District No. 5 firefighters contained a brush fire just below the Grant County Fairgrounds, fueled by high winds and a suspected firework. The fire was contained and burned about 40 acres of land. Firefighters should be commended for their quick work and follow-up efforts targeting hot spots. Fortunately, no structures were destroyed.

So, what is freedom?
July 3, 2016 6 a.m.

So, what is freedom?

July 4 we celebrate Independence Day. It is a time for our nation to reflect on gaining our independence from Great Britain. However, is that day as significant as the independence and freedom we possess as individuals? As important as July 4 is to us in the United States, there is a much more important freedom granted to every person that is ever born. It is the freedom of choice. The Bible makes it clear in 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV) that true freedom exists when Jesus spirit is at work in an individual’s life, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
