Firework sparks brush fire in Moses Lake

| July 6, 2016 10:16 PM

MOSES LAKE — A firework reportedly caused a brush fire in Moses Lake late Monday night.

Firefighters with Grant County Fire District No. 5 were dispatched to the fire, which was located in a field behind a home on Harrington Lane Northeast about 8:30 p.m. High winds caused the fire to spread uphill toward Airway Drive Northeast, just below the Grant County Fairgrounds. Police blocked off Airway Drive from Hillcrest Drive Northeast to West Valley Road as firefighters attempted to contain the blaze.

Crews on the ground reported the fire was under control about 9:40 p.m., with firefighters remaining at the scene for a couple more hours working the hillside and extinguishing hot spots. There were no reported injuries or structures destroyed. The fire is estimated to have scorched about 40 acres.
