MOSES LAKE — J & C Hair Salon owner Debbie Vela has found a way to intertwine her personal life into a professional setting at her shop at 401 Canterbury Lane.

On the wall is a reminder that life is good: “Do one thing every day that makes you happy,” the sign reads. On the shelf are pictures of her daughter and granddaughter. There’s a group shot of her husband Steve’s unit in Iraq, which happens to include actor Chuck Norris, who was on location. In fact all vets get $5 bucks off their haircut in her shop. Those who serve are always welcome.

There’s just enough to give you a personal side to the one that runs the place, but the two-chair work station is where she and stylist Stephanie Murrell take care of business.

“When you finish someone’s hair and they love it. You’re a part of how they feel about themselves and that’s special,” said Vela, who grew up in Seattle. “I get a chance to meet people in the community. That’s what I like about what we do here, there’s no drama. I want people to be happy and we’re professional. We want to make people walking out of here with the best experience that brings them back.”

She is focused on the business side, she says, but being behind the chair is what makes her work so enjoyable.

“I have clients that I’ve had forever. I’m meeting new people and that’s the fun part,” Vela said. “I like small towns and the country lifestyle. My husband loves the city. He’s been all over the world. He grew up here. It’s a great place to raise a family. Who knows when retirement comes?”

Moses Lake with its Fourth of July celebration, the fountain in the lake, it’s place where everybody knows your name. It’s all good.

J & C Hair Salon isn’t located in the mall or in some major grocery outlet. It’s a professional setting just off Wheeler Road up on the hill.

“I love the location. It’s homey, but not secluded,” said Vela, who joined the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce in May. “It’s a relaxed atmosphere. But it’s professional without a bunch of kids running around. In working with Stephanie, we’re professionals and this is what we do. So, it’s perfect.”

They pride themselves in being a part of somebody’s look and making customers feel good about themselves.

“I love it,” is music to Debbie Vela’s ears.
