MOSES LAKE — Back when the United States was founded, John Adams told his wife Abigail the day should be celebrated with fireworks and “illuminations” and general good times. And in the Columbia Basin the country’s birthday will be celebrated with fireworks – and parades and music and running events and classic cars and soccer tournaments and the world’s largest cherry pie and – whew. That’s a lot.

To stop radical Islam, stop intolerance of Muslims

Like many Americans, Ann Mix (letters, June 23) is concerned about radical Islam. Her letter focuses on external features of the radicals — what they wear, what mosques they attend — and suggests that we should ban traditional Muslim clothing and shut down any mosque that promotes these ideas.

School board voters must set priorities

Moses Lake needs a new high school. That is abundantly clear after visiting the existing facility. During peak times, halls are crowded with students, making it difficult for everyone to efficiently navigate their way. Classroom space is at a premium. The school was built in 1959 when our community was much smaller. It’s a different time, with newer technology available and more demands on our students.

Women and girls deserve better treatment

As an outspoken citizen of the city of Moses Lake, I’m very disappointed and displeased that the city of Moses Lake didn’t hire a woman to be the next chief of police in Moses Lake. Shame on us the way we treat women. In my hometown they had a woman chief of police. The crime rate went down and the morale in the department went up to an A-plus level. Without women all these jobs will be unoccupied and vacant, and this country will have better luck if we treat woman and girls right with respect.

Stricter laws, easier commitment key to stopping terrorism

What do the radical Islamic terrorists have in common? It is not the method of killing. It is mosques and belief in sharia law. Stop spending unnecessarily and plan for the future

The biggest problem and failure in the United States of America is that we waste and spend too much money without thinking about tomorrow or our future. Then when we spend and waste all our money, we blame and get angry with the rich who save their money and spend every dollar responsibly. Credit cards and title loans are robbing people without a weapon. It’s time for all of us to get wise and rip up those credit cards and start spending a dollar and saving a dollar. Like blues singer Bobby Blue Bland says, “A change is coming and it will take a dollar or two. Save and put away for this tough time to come.” And mark James Earl Jones’ words: a change is coming and it’s coming soon. Get wise and save and stop spending and wasting so much unnecessary money and tell the credit card companies, “I just can’t be your fool anymore.”

Satan's hand behind violence

The news has been filled with the Orlando shooting, LGBT rights, and transgender bathrooms. Gun ownership rights are again under discussion by a few in government positions. ISIS, Al-Qaeda and jihad are mentioned nearly every day along with radical Islam. Nearly every day there are reports of gang violence, domestic violence, and all sorts of evil deeds. We need to find a common thread through all of this in order to find the solution to the problem.

MOSES LAKE — It turns out there are some rocks that look really cool when they’re sprayed with water. But the sun’s rays won’t make the water evaporate right away, even with a magnifying glass. Hey. look at that - science, right there, and it’s fun. Sometimes science tastes good, too. Cub Scouts at the annual Columbia Basin District Day Camp used graham crackers and pudding to mimic the layers of the earth - smashed up graham crackers for rocks and dirt, pudding for the molten lava layers. The Cub Scouts started to giggle over the idea they were eating the earth. Columbia Basin District Day Camp is designed to teach kids about science, and about the values of scouting. Each scientific experiment and activity came with a demonstration of ideas in the Cub Scout creed.

Trial by e-mob

By now everybody has heard of Brock Turner, the swimmer-turned-rapist who received a six-month jail sentence for sexually assaulting a fellow student at Stanford University. Turner, 20, took advantage of a drunk woman’s unconsciousness to assault her behind a dumpster, stopping only when two other students physically hauled him away from her and sat on him until police arrived. Prosecutors urged Judge Aaron Persky to sentence Turner to at least six years in prison, while probation officials called for a more lenient sentence. At the sentencing, Turner’s father read a letter in which he said that prison was “a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action.” In the end, the judge gave him six months in county lockup, of which he may serve as little as three months. He must also register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and participate in a sex offender rehabilitation program.

LGBT people are all God's children

I speak out against at all forms of injustices, but I find it very difficult for me to speak out against hate against LGBT human beings in Moses Lake. I once read a speech by an NAACP Baptist minister urging everyone to continue the struggle for voting rights and included in the speech where he was saying that everyone deserve the right to vote and named many oppressed people including gay people. Many of the people listening to my speech only heard the word gay and slyly put me down for mentioning the word “gay.” I feel that if the murder of the innocent people in Florida didn’t open eyes, nothing will. I have cried every day since the murders because I have not stood up in churches and spoken out when a preacher is putting down folks because they saw gay people kissing and feeling OK because they are surrounded by Christians that feel it’s okay to put down LGBT people. Yet the same group ask for forgiveness for crimes of rape, drug abuse. and other crimes.

(NAPSI)—Men seeking a more youthful appearance should remember that their skin is different from women’s-thicker and with larger pores—and needs special skin care products geared to them. By age 50 or so, men’s skin starts to lose its ability to stay hydrated, leading to skin sagging, wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes and large pores that become more visible. Another way to keep up a more youthful, put-together appearance is to be sure your facial hair is soft, neat and healthy looking.

Is it the soft puffy insides that spring back a bit as you cut into it? For me, it’s the golden browned crispiness, then soaked with my favorite toppings. A good waffle is also one you make up at home for family and friends, all of whom get to share a freshly made breakfast treat. Freshly made waffles, even from a mix, taste better than those you may find already made up in the freezer section of the local megamart.

Health and Wellness Expo set for Sept. 24

Lots to do for children and adults

MOSES LAKE — The annual Central Washington Health and Wellness Expo is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24 in the ATEC building on the Big Bend Community College campus. Sponsors are Columbia Basin Herald, Confluence Health, Samaritan Healthcare, Moses Lake Community Health, Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata and Health Alliance. Admission is free. As its name implies, the expo focuses on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, providing information on health issues, introducing people to agencies and companies that can help them negotiate the healthcare system. And it’s more than that - it’s fun. “Lots of prizes and games for kids and adults,” said expo organizer Tera Redwine. The expo features a Kid Zone, which includes 300 teddy bears for kids to take through the Teddy Bear Clinic. Kids get a new teddy bear and go through the clinic, which teaches them about maintaining good health. Bears get a checkup and along the way their owners (and their moms and dads) get information about healthy habits. Local fire departments and EMS companies and agencies will bring emergency equipment for kids to look at and get close to. Depending on its availability, the LifeFlight emergency medical response helicopter will set down and let kids (and adults) take a peek inside. There’s a coloring contest sponsored by Samaritan Healthcare, and lots of other activities for children, Redwine said. Information will go out to schools in Moses Lake, Soap Lake, Ephrata and Quincy about two weeks prior to the expo. The ATEC building is filled with vendors all day. “The vendors come from all over,” she explained. The 2015 expo attracted more than 70 vendors, from agencies and health care providers, to skin care and nutrition companies, to health insurers, to financial planning, to home healthcare to retail companies (like Costco). Fall is the season for open enrollment in public health insurance programs like Medicare, and there will be Medicare information for seniors. Other topics for seniors will be covered as well. Demonstrations are also scheduled. One of her goals, Redwine said, is to expand the demonstration list, adding more exercise options for people of all ages, and regardless of their initial physical condition. The expo has its own Facebook page, and it will be updated as the date gets closer and more information becomes available.

Thanks to the community for supporting medical mission

The Moses Lake Medical Team would like to thank the community of Moses lake for their great show of support when Mr. K.J. Wright, who plays for the Seattle Seahawks, came to our city on April 30 to greet fans and sign autographs. The money raised at this event will fund our next medical mission. A group of team members will travel at their own expense to Kebbi State, Nigeria in October of this year for a two-week mission. The patients who will receive medical, surgical, dental and vision care free of charge are individuals who have no way of paying for these services out of pocket and no access to government-funded healthcare. We will spend the money raised in April to purchase medications and medical supplies for those underserved people. We were delighted to see approximately 800 Seahawks fans turn out for this event. Several individuals and businesses in our community helped make our event a success, including six members of the Moses Lake Police Department who volunteered their time to provide security. We hope that all of the participants enjoyed meeting K.J. Wright while making a contribution to aq worthy cause. We could not do the work that we do without such generous support from the wonderful people of the Columbia Basin.

Protests should be peaceful and law-abiding

Freedom to protest doesn’t grant anyone the right to break the law and engage in violence. People who break the law and engage in violence are not peaceful proterters; they’re criminals who need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. When I saw these protesters burning the American flag, that broke my heart. People have died and sacrificed for that flag. It’s a shame and disgrace to burn and disrespect our flag. As a nation we need to start back obeying and respecting the law. The best way for anyone to protest is to vote and obey the law.
