No new taxes

| June 2, 2016 1:00 PM

I recently read an article titled “Best Places to Invest in Real Estate in Washington.” One hundred twenty-five cities were ranked and Moses Lake is ranked 89. One of the parameters used in the ranking was “City and county tax per $1,000 of assessed value.” Information was used from the Washington Department of Revenue for this category and Moses Lake has the fifth-highest rate of the 125 cities. The study did not include school taxes.

My property tax bill includes voter-approved school taxes and the state levy for schools. The voter-approved school taxes represent 34.9 percent of my property tax and combined with the state levy 51.4 percent of my taxes go to schools. And now the Moses Lake School Board of Directors plans on a new school bond election Feb. 14, 2017 when the “snow birds” are south for the winter. If the school bond is passed it will mean higher taxes.

Vote no new taxes.
