EPHRATA — Columbia Basin’s 17U club couldn’t put together a solid performance in a twin bill with Northwest Premier.

The River Dogs (White) held a 2-0 lead in the opener before losing 8-2 and dropped a gut-wrenching game in eight innings 1-0.

Despite the two losses, coach Dan Caballero was pleased with the effort in Game 2.

“We played much better,” he said. “I was a lot happier with how we did that game.”

Blake Vandel pitched three innings of shutout baseball and the River Dogs held a 2-0 lead entering the fifth inning before Premier rallied. The visitor’s took advantage of six errors and scored eight runs in the fifth.

“Too many errors,” Caballero said. “When you have six errors in a game it’s tough to win.”

Kaeden Murphy, of Quincy, got the River Dogs on the board in the third inning when he was able to score from third base on a wild throw to home plate.

Both teams pitched and played exceptional defense through seven innings in the nightcap. However, Northwest Premier was able to advance runners to second and third base with two outs in the eighth.

A blooper to left field allowed the go-ahead run to score and Columbia Basin couldn’t answer in the home half.

The River Dogs (Blue) — the older team — heads to Seattle this weekend for the Baseball Beyond Borders Invitational.

Spuds lose at Yakima Valley

SELAH — The Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak — comprised of numerous players with state tournament experience — swept Central Washington, winning both games 10-0.

Central Washington was no-hit in the opener. Cameron Duke accounted for the Spuds’ lone hit in Game 2.

Both teams face off again today at Larson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30.

Walleyes swept by West Valley

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake was swept by West Valley at home.

West Valley won the opener 14-1 in six innings and took the nightcap 8-0.

West Valley opened up a 7-1 lead after four innings and used a seven-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Moses Lake managed two hits total in Game 2, while West Valley jumped ahead 5-0 after the first inning.

The Walleyes travel to Yakima for a rematch with West Valley today.
