WAHLUKE — A teacher with the Wahluke School District was booked into the Grant County Jail on two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Michael Lee Smith, 45, Wenatchee was arrested Tuesday at Wahluke High School, according to information from Grant County Jail records. Smith was an instructor and a director of the Career Technical Education program at Wahluke.

Smith was also arrested on one count of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes via social media.

“Investigators received information that one sexual offense happened on campus and another off campus,” said Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones in a press release. The sheriff’s office declined to provide further information, citing the “sensitive nature of the case and to protect the identity of the victim.”

District officials could not be reached for comment. A call to the Wahluke School District office resulted in a recorded message that said calls were not being answered at this time.

Students and community members posted the news to Wahluke High School’s Facebook page. “Naw, can’t believe it. Not Mr. Smith,” read one comment. Others echoed the comment of a post that called the news “crazy,” and one wrote “OMG.”

Smith is being held without bail.
