THANK YOU: Reader, family grateful for help

Thank you does not even begin to cover how grateful we are to all who have supported us in some way during this time in our lives. The turn out at the spaghetti feed and auction was beyond what we could've ever imagined. Please know how incredibly thankful we are, and blessed, because of all of you! The generosity and support of this community is absolutely amazing, and we are thankful to be a part of it. A special thank you to our amazing friends, Amador and Lisa Castro and Sandy Hanson, who put the spaghetti feed and auction, the blood and bone marrow drive together in honor of Derek. I know there are many, many more who helped with these events, and please know how thankful we are to you as well. What a great community to live in!

Reader upset with column

I did not appreciate your "My Turn" article that your wrote about our public school system. The opinion you shared, based on a few petty observations, was not a true representation of our school system. It disgusts me that you would express to our community that the Moses Lake School District staff members are not "good enough" for your/our children. Did you ever stop the think that the man with dirty jeans may have been in maintenance and perhaps he had just been crawling around on the roof top fixing the ventilation system or working outside in the dirt/mud trying to get the sprinkler system going? Or perhaps he was a hard-working staff member's spouse who was invited to join them for a potluck. Perhaps he should have gone home first to change his clothes before joining the staff for the potluck, I mean, how horrible it would be for students to see someone at school with dirty jeans! Or maybe he was a shop teacher or a custodian. In any case, he obviously was a hard-working member of our society. As for the teacher who bent over and bared a few inches of her back. I'm sure she didn't purposely "flash" you, but we're all human and make mistakes. The fact that you were offended by this tells me that you are shallow and insecure. I do not condone kids, or anyone, using foul language but did you stop to voice your concerns to the young man using the f-word? Obviously our staff members can not be in every place at every moment to keep this kind of behavior from happening. If you think that your children will never use the f-word in a heated conversation when they grow up you have a lot to learn. And if you think they will not be exposed to this kind of language in a private school you're plain ignorant.

April 22, 2011 6 a.m.

Reader supports reporter

Finally somebody had the courage to tell it like it is in our schools, Kudos to Lynne and her article. It is about time that Michelle quits hiding behind her desk and go visit the high school for a day and stay the whole time, not just a little while. I have had four children go through the Moses Lake School District and with each one it had gotten worse. It use to be the children had respect for the teachers now the kids run the show, and the teachers hide under their desks and pretend everything is ok. Well it isn't. I think the article that the editor wrote was a bunch of bunk, Lynne got approval to have the article run, so yay to her, Poor teachers. They really need to take back their classrooms and maybe the kids would respect them for doing it.

Reader angry about column

I know better than to fight with someone who buys printer's ink in 50 gallon barrels but Lynne Lynch's shallow and sophomoric article condemning the Moses Lake school system after her brief singular visit to the high school demands a response. I did not find her article courageous, I thought it was asinine. It was a complete disservice to the hardworking and talented teachers, administrators and support staff at the high school.

Reader insulted by column

To judge an entire school district on the basis of a one day, one hour visit is extremely small-minded. To write off all Moses Lake schools and teachers on the basis of a dirty pair of jeans and the gap between a teacher's sweatshirt and pants when bending over is shortsighted in the extreme. It was very poor judgement on your part to allow Lynne Lynch to malign all Moses Lake teachers on such flimsy evidence. I'm sure your subscription cancellations are proof of how many teachers were deeply offended by this article. Teacher's are being asked to do more and more while resources are steadily being taken away. Perhaps Mrs. Lynch should spend several days or weeks in a variety of classrooms and schools before such criticism is so blissfully and ignorantly offered. How embarrassing for the Herald to have published such an insulting article.

April 22, 2011 6 a.m.

Reader won't subscribe, angry with column

I am a teacher at Frontier Middle School in the Moses Lake School District, and I'm writing to let you know that the "My Turn" article by Lynne Lynch regarding her visit to a local public school was as ridiculous as it was offensive. It floors me that this trash was allowed to be printed in our local paper.

April 22, 2011 6 a.m.

LYNNE LYNCH'S MY TURN Reader defends her former school

The debate about the quality of public schools is not new, but the arguments should be based on more meaningful information than provided in this article. Lynch makes her decision of private education being superior based on three incidents which she saw in the few minutes she was at the school. This is too important a decision to draw from such little research. Why did you not ask the gentleman wearing the "dirty blue jeans" more about what he does, instead of assuming? Why not stay around the school and visit more before coming to such a harsh opinion? Where is the additional research that a reporter is expected to do?

Authority passes along turkey-hunting tips

MOSES LAKE - Spring is a special time for turkey hunters. These critters, the hunters, will lay in wait, not moving a muscle, for an hour or longer, while waiting for a tom turkey to advance within range or the weapon he or she has at hand. This is great sport and required great skill or just a lot of luck.

April 22, 2011 6 a.m.

Reader wants reporter fired

I feel that Ms. Lynch owes the teacher at the high school a huge apology in writing in the newspaper before the week is out. In fact, I don't think she should even have a job after writing such a disgusting article about the high school in general. I don't think the Herald can't afford to have every teacher, EA, cook, custodian, bus driver and maintenance workers cancel their subscriptions and that is what is happening today. I don't think Ms. Lynch should judge other people in a public write up and get away with it. Since I work in sports, a lot if not all my pictures and articles that I have sent into the paper have been published and we get good write ups from the sports staff, but this write up is so totally uncalled for.

April 22, 2011 6 a.m.

Reader suggests trading places with teacher

Regarding Lynn Lynch's opinion regarding her decision to send her pre-kindergarten children to private school after attending a ninth grade class, I would like to ask her to consider that her judgment might be a bit different if she were to teach for a day ... then let the teacher be the reporter.

April 22, 2011 6 a.m.

LYNNE LYNCH'S MY TURN Reader applauds writer

As a mom, I'd like to thank Lynne Lynch for her brave My Turn in Monday's paper. Being from a public school family, I know the public education system well. I chose to home school my child, partly because of the inherent failures in the system that would ultimately be detrimental to my child - things common to any large operation.

Reader is disappointed with column

I would like to express my complete disappointment and anger in your recent article concerning Moses Lake High School. Our high school has so many positive activities going on every day that to focus on a kid swearing in the parking lot and a teacher having a problem with her clothes is flat out ridiculous and insulting to all teachers and students. Did it occur to you that you could have said something to the kid swearing? Supposedly you are a writer, why not challenge him to expand his vocabulary and use more appropriate words? As far as the teacher's shirt pulling up in back, are you suggesting that you have never had an embarrassing wardrobe problem?

Reader responds to column

In reference to Lynne Lynch's provocative column, she sounds very much like a thoughtful parent. There's nothing wrong with wanting to put a buffer between our children and social weirdness. However, if she plans to protect her children by keeping them out of public schools, then she'll have to keep them out of the world at large also.

LYNNE LYNCH'S MY TURN Reader wants apology

Hi, my name is Hayden Leslie and I go to Moses Lake High School. Recently I was reading the paper and noticed an article that to me was very unprofessional and rude. It was the article about why the journalist is sending her kids to a private school instead of the high school. She judged every single kid in the high school by listening to a conversation in the parking lot. The teachers can not really govern the parking lot with so many students. And she said a teacher with a slim figure bent down and showed the class her underwear. Believe me our teachers are very disciplined and would not do that in front of the whole class. It just upsets me that a grown woman can act so childish and draw conclusions just because of a few kids said bad words. I think that she should apologize what she said because she hasn't heard the other side of the story. My and the rest of the kids at the high school's side.

BULLYING -- Parent concerned for her child

My son is 11 and in the fifth grade. He has been getting bullied in school. I've had enough. I have brought it up to the principal and teacher on several occasions and all I get is, "I don't see this kid doing such a thing," "I have never had a problem," and "He's getting such good grades." Grades don't tell a child's behavior in school and their grades should not be judged at all. It has gotten to the point where a child needs to bring some sort of protection. A child should not feel unsafe at school at any time. It is the school's responsibility to make sure our children are safe. If a child is feeling unsafe, are our children really safe at our Moses Lake schools? I think we need to do all we can do to stop this bullying. The schools say they don't allow it but they don't see the bullying one bit. They bullying is starting on my kindergartener by another fifth grader. I'm out of ideas on what to do in situations like this. I feel like no one wants to take the time to sit and listen to what us parents have to say about our children. It is not wasting any time when it concerns our children.

NATIONAL BUDGET: Reader encourages fasting protest

We don't have a budget crisis is Washington. We have a moral crisis. When Congress can seriously debate forcing veterans into homelessness and cutting food aid to pregnant women and children, while giving tax breaks to billionaires, something is very, very wrong. Those who will go hungry because of these cuts are largely invisible to decision-makers in Congress. By fasting in solidarity, we have an opportunity to make their suffering visible, and expose the immorality of this policy.

PUD LUNCHEON

The general manager of the PUD recently cancelled the 2011 luncheon held annually for Grant County PUD retirees. The event is a 25-year-plus tradition that provides retirees an opportunity to learn about what is going on at the utility. It was canceled because, as the manager stated in a letter to all retirees, "the budget constraints keep us from funding it." What a joke. The average cost of the luncheon for the last several years has been $2,250 and it is always held at a local business. And, Mr. Manager, your pay raise this year was $5,410. Get real, and while you are at it, work on being a little more transparent with that billion-dollar facility of ours (customers/owners of Grant County) that you manage.

DOC HASTINGS

I want to comment on Don Majors' March 31, 2011 letter to the editor concerning Doc Hastings. Mr. Majors is correct in pointing out that "Doc" wants to cut "entitlements" like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Veterans, Disability and those living in poverty. But, did you notice, that Doc does not mention cutting the farm subsidy program - a federal government program that spends $10- to $30 billion a year in the U.S. subsidizing farmers (source: New York Times, Jan. 15, 2011). Why are farmers entitled to their money and the rest of us are not? Is that because they contribute big dollars to Doc's campaigns? That is why Doc is a hypocrite. He says, "Let's get the Federal government (just the dollars) out of our lives, except if you're a farmer." Send letters to Doc and let him know what's up!

BULLYING

We all remember when school was simple. Without the drama, stress, and the biggest decision you had was which color crayon to use. That was a time when the cafeteria was also a place you looked forward to going to, a place to have fun. Well, now, welcome to middle school. The seventh grade cafeteria is not like it used to be. It's like we've gone back in time to segregation. Except that this time we're judged on how we look, what we wear, and the money we have. Why do we need to judge people by how they look, dress, and how much money they have? Girls are trash-talked, back-stabbed, and heart broken. Well, middle school is a battlefield without the guns and knives. People use things that are just as deadly though - words. Once those are out, you can't take them back. They stay with that person forever, scar them. They shout in the halls. I hold my head high even though the words hurt as bad as getting slapped across the face. Nobody realizes the effects those words have on people. Those words beat girls down, lower their self-esteem and their confidence. Girls kill themselves and other people over these words. Words are deadly. Girls become violent and depressed. What happened to "treat people the way you want to be treated" or "don't judge a book by its color"? Bullying is horrible and leads to even more horrible things. So, before you open your mouth to point out somebody else's flaws, take a quick look at yourself, to make sure you're perfect first. Just as Rachel said, "Maybe you'll just start a chain reaction!"

BUDGET CUTS

These proposed house budget cuts in HR1 are merely window-dressing for a political agenda that will surely put us into a deep recession if enacted. Only corporations and rich people, like the Koch brothers, will profit from these draconian cuts to our nation's social structure. Our nation was built on the principles of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, for everyone, not just those born into a family trust.

Drano Lake offers bright kings on the lower Columbia River

Thousands of anglers chase tens of thousands of king salmon on the Columbia River every year, and it all starts on the lower river.  The first to enter the river are the spring salmon. There is a season for them up here, on the Icicle River at Leavenworth. Anglers that just can't wait for May or June for them to arrive head south and fish for them near the town of White Salmon at Drano Lake.  I have done just this the past two years; thanks to Shane Magnuson of Upper Columbia Guide Service, and this is what it's like to fish for early kings on the lower river.

Reader grateful for youth in Moses Lake

I once lived in the wonderful town of Moses Lake and will never forget it and all my dear friends that were a part of my life then. They know who they are and I sincerely hope that all their expectations have been achieved. I am well and recently retired. I have three great kids and a wife that still loves me after all these years. I owe a lot to the upbringing I got in Moses Lake. You that live there now should be grateful that you live in such a great town. I grew up swimming in the lake and remember going out to the sand dunes back behind Westlake. I remember the cranes and carp along with the flocks of ducks and how I tried to catch them under water but never could. It was a great time going to Frontier Junior High and having Mr. Hall get after me and Mr. Lietzke tell me to get busy. It's amazing how things work out but it is so wonderful that one can make their own way and do the best that they can with what God gave them. I was fortunate to have lived in your town and will never forget it for as long as I live. Thank you Moses Lake and all the wonderful people that made it possible.
