Andersons-plus-one take Royal City golf title

ROYAL CITY - Daniel Nighswonger teamed with Don Anderson, Bob Anderson and D.J. Anderson to outguess howling winds on Saturday and claim the gross championship of the Royal City Community Center Grand Opening Tournament with a 63.

Winning on the net side with an eye-popping 46 was the team of Dain Craver, K.R. Thompson, Jose Ramirez and Kelly Delay.

The big winner, however, was the Royal City Golf Course. Royal Golf Association President Andrew Perkins noted it was the best-attended RGA tournament so far and the most lucrative.

"This will be good for the golf course," he said.

The tournament attracted 60 players who paid entry fees and golf car rentals. Most of them bought mulligans, which built up a raffle prize pot of about $600, with a good share going to the course.

Perkins organized an unusual format that gave everyone, even the poorest-scoring group, a shot at numerous prizes in a post-tourney raffle. They ranged from a five-dollar bill to a grand prize golf outing at the Coeur d'Alene Resort. 

All players started out with five raffle tickets. They added one to their total for each mulligan they bought. Those with on-course success got even more tickets to improve their raffle chances.

There were two grand prize winners, Josh Mathis and Teddy Escobar. They took home a one-night stay and two rounds of golf at Coeur d'Alene.

Men's long drive, Josh Scroggins.

Women's long drive, Sharon Dorsing.

Men's closest to pin (on No. 2), Pat Dorsing, 11-6.

Men's closest to pin (on No. 7), Jim Muir, 26-0.

Men's closest to pin (on No. 11), Andy Martin, 11-3/4.

Women's closest to pin (on No. 11), Nicole Dorsing, 15-4.

Men's putting contest (on No. 6), Darin Martin, 1/4-inch.

Women's putting contest (on No. 6) Mary Allcock, 7-11.
