MOSES LAKE - The first Moses Lake Marathon and Fun Run is scheduled for Saturday.

Four events, including a family 5K, a 10K, a half marathon and a marathon, start at the Moses Lake High School track at 8 a.m.

The cost for registration ranges from $25 for the family 5K to $60 for the marathon.

Brant Mayo, the Boys and Girls Club of the Columbia Basin's executive director, said the event started after someone approached the club's board suggesting starting a marathon.

"We had been looking to do something that promoted healthy activities and healthy lifestyles," he said. "We formed a committee within our board of directors and we have done a lot of work for the last few months."

The proceeds from the events go to the Boys and Girls Club, Mayo said, adding as of Monday morning the club had received more than 125 entries. Registration is available at www.mlmarathon.com until Wednesday.

People can also register from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the club, located at 410 W. Third Ave. in Moses Lake.

"We set an early goal of 150 participants. I think we will have that," he said. "It's spring and people are looking to get outside and engage in healthy activities and it helps us raise more money at the same time."

Each event has its own course, each starting at the Moses Lake High School track. The marathon is scheduled to leave first with other events staggered afterwards.

"We'd like to see this as something to build on," Mayo said. "If we can bring people into the community and encourage a lot of individuals and families to get out and be healthy. It's a win-win for everybody."
