Battle of Basin shows quality

QUINCY - Teams didn't go head-to-head for scoring honors at the

Battle of Basin track meet at Quincy High School on Thursday, but

nonetheless quality results mattered just the same.

On the boys' side there were plenty of top performances,

spearheaded by the Ephrata Tigers.

On the boys' side there were plenty of top performances, spearheaded by the Ephrata Tigers.

Christian Nuckolls won the 100-meter dash (11.61) and was followed by teammates Jacob Green (11.73), Skyler Mann (11.76), and Oscar Matus (11.83) to fill the top four spots with Tiger runners.

The 200-meter run saw more Ephrata dominance as Nuckolls won with a 23.41, and coming up behind him were Jonathan Green (23.91), Matus (23.96), Mann (24.49. and Kyle Charles (24.51), to sweep the top five.

Green won the 400-meter run with a 52.21 and Matus took second (53.03) and Steven Monda ended up third (54.05).

In the 800-meter race, Othello's Antonio Estrada took first (2:03.59), ahead of Royal's Ethan Tonnemaker (2:05.14), and Quincy's Manny Lopez (2:12.92).

Charles earned another Tiger win in the 1,600-meter run (4:50.29) as Adrian Diaz of Quincy ended up second (4:50.36), and Othello's Alan Garza (4:54.26) rounded out the top three.

Tonnemaker took first in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 10:15.01, while Diaz (10:22.43) and Garza (10:36.87) finished toward the top as well.

Quincy's Luke Grigg swept the 110-meter (16.04) and 300-meter hurdle (42.60) races, while Christian Perez (Quincy, 16.71) and Evan McMartin (Ephrata, 16.91) took 2-3 in the former and Royal's Laddie Goroski (43.75) and Ephrata's Josh Hill (44.47) did the same in the latter race.

The shot put was won by Armando Tafoya (46-04) of Quincy, as Derek Valdez (43-03) of Othello and Mark Delgado (40-11) of Royal rounded out the top three.

Curtis Treiber of Ephrata won the discus (118-11), as Rick Arce (Othello) took second (103-02) and Delgado (101-01) ended up third.

Quincy's Javier Santana won the javelin (138-00), and his teammate Domingo Villarreal ended up second (137-10), ahead of Ephrata's Brad Christensen (135-10).

Quincy won two of three jump competitions, as Ian Huxtable (20-08.50) won the long jump ahead of Jacob Crowder of Ephrata (18-07,50), and Nuckolls (17-11.50).

Huxtable won the high jump (5-08) as he tied Crowder for the top spot as third was claimed by Tyler Purcell of Ephrata (5-06).

Crowder won the triple jump (40-04.50), Layton Lange (Ephrata, 40-00.25) took second and Quincy's Javier .Santana ended up third (37.01.00)

Grigg won the pole vault (13-06), as the Jacks swept with Michael Veenendaal (12-06), and Darren Hodges (12-06) tying for second.

Ephrata's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams won the respective competitions.

On the girls' side, top three finishers were: 100-meters - 1. Jazmine Perez (Quincy, 13.14), 2. Julia Weaver (Ephrata, 13.71), 3. Elizabeth Blancas (Quincy, 13.94); 200-meters - 1. Weaver (28.42), 2. Blancas (29.08), 3. Lauren Yount (Ephrata, 29.17); 400-meters - 1. Taylor Barnes (Ephrata, 1:03.71), 2. Cynthia Cid (Royal, 1:08.42), 3. Lana Sween (Ephrata, 1:10.82); 800-meters - 1. Jazmine Perez (Quincy, 2:35.49), 2. Danielle Friend (Ephrata, 2:36.57), 3. Marinda Talley (Quincy, 2:39.03);  1,600-meters - 1. Hannah Gunderson (5:44.60), 2. Shala Scott (5:45.70), 3. Sween (5:55.61), all Ephrata; 3,200-meters - 1. Friend (12:35.95), 2. Sarah Martinez (Quincy, 13:28.11), 3. Ana Rodriguez (Othello, 13:44.07); 110-meter hurdles - 1. Ephrata's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams took first while the Quincy Lady Jacks' 4x200-meter relay team claimed the crown in that event.
