EPHRATA - As required by a new Washington law, the boater education card program starts to be phased into effect this year.

In 2011, boat operators ages 35 and younger are required to take a boater safety course and get a boater education card, according to Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones.

This year the law applies to operators of motorboats of 15 horsepower or greater. The card requirement will be phased in through 2014, when all boaters born after Jan. 1, 1955 will need a card.

"We encourage everyone, even those who are exempt, to get this important safety training," Jones said.

The fine for not carrying a card is $87, Jones noted. He said there are several ways to go about getting the needed training.

One way is to call the boating safety program at 360-903-8555. Another way is with a visit to www.boatered.org.
