Man serving at least eight years for Royal City rape

EPHRATA - A Royal City man is serving at least eight years in prison for raping his 13-year-old granddaughter.

Antonio R. Calderon, 55, pleaded guilty to rape in the second degree in Grant County Superior Court. 

Calderon has no prior convictions leading to a minimum sentence of between six-and-a-half years to eight-and-a-half years in prison. 

Grant County Superior Court Judge John Antosz set the sentence at eight years and two months. 

When Calderon finishes the minimum term, a Department of Corrections board will review his case, deciding whether he can be released. If they don't decide to release him, his case will be reviewed again after two years. He faces the possibility of serving life in prison, according to court records.

Calderon picked up the victim and her sister, taking them to his house to pick vegetables in August, according to a Grant County sheriff's report. When they arrived at the residence, he offered to teach the victim how to drive, taking her to a nearby orchard.

When they arrived, the man forced the victim to undress, raping her in the van, according to the police report. 

After the incident, they drove back to Calderon's house, where the victim reported the attack to her sister.
