MOSES LAKE - A superb offensive showing in the second of two games against the Davis Pirates on Friday, gave the Moses Lake Chiefs a split of the teams' Big Nine doubleheader at Larson Field.

The Chiefs scored at least four runs in three innings and cruised to a 15-7 win to ease the hurt of a late 11-5 loss in the opener against the Pirates.

In the first game Moses Lake traded proverbial punches with Davis until the Pirates erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead they would not relinquish.

"We answered every call in the first game early," Moses Lake interim head coach Quintz Whitaker said. "Mitch Yada couldn't find his groove on the mound and battled through four innings. Nate is the kind of pitcher who guys are going to put the bat on the ball so we need to expect that as a defense and pick him up."

The Chiefs (5-9, 2-4) committed two errors in the game.

Tony Hernandez and Cameron Alvarado each had two hits while the latter batted in two runs.

In the second game the Chiefs scored five runs in their half of the second inning and four more in each of the bottom halves of the third and sixth innings to roll to the win.

Moses Lake belted out 13 hits to compensate for four errors.

Nick Dodds, Bryton Redal, Hernandez and Alvarado each had three hits.

Alvarado knocked in five runs.

"We are coming along and the quality of at bats we had tonight was really good," Whitaker said. "We moved guys over and had lots of opportunities to hit with runners in scoring position. The harder we work on the bases and more pressure we put on the other team the better pitches we see to hit.  We believe that our best baseball is yet to come."
