Chiefs track teams begin league action

WENATCHEE - Big 9 track competition began last night in Wenatchee as the Moses Lake Chiefs battled the host Panthers and Eisenhower and Davis High Schools.

The Chiefs girls defeated Davis 88-53, while dropping decisions to Wenatchee (103-46) and Eisenhower (102-48).

On the boys' side, Moses Lake lost all three decisions.

Sadie Nielsen won the discus (119-06) and Jordan Loera took first in the triple jump (32-07.5) to pace the ladies.

Taylor Ballard captured second place in the shot put (30-3.5) and Nielsen grabbed third (29-6).

Selina Koon took second in the high jump (4-10) while teammates Cherie Fackrell and Kimberly Bakker tied for fourth (4-06).

Loera ended up second in the javelin (118-06) and Paige Dyer took fourth (106-00). Loera also ended up in third in the long jump (15-03.5).

Magie Munoz finished third in the 400-meter run (103.08) while London Cleverly took fourth (1:05.39).

Kayla Grigg took fifth in the 100-meter run (13.32), Cleverly (27.91) did the same in the 200-meter run,

The 4x100-meter relay team (Grigg, Lunning, Keiley Garcia, and Munoz, third place), 4x200-meter relay team (Cleverly, London, Garcia, and Munoz, second place) and 4x400-meter relay team (Selina Koon, Megan Roughan, Holly Martin, and Hannah Marsh, fifth place) all finished in the top five.

"The girls did awesome and we saw our young group of freshmen girls do well," MLHS girls coach Nicki Weiland said. "They have a lot of quickness and speed. We are finding out now that we are tapping into their jumping ability."

The boys lost to Eisenhower (93-51), Wenatchee (104-41), and Davis (77-68).

"It was the first league meet so it was exciting for us," boys coach Kevin Whittall said. "We had most of our kids back healthy so we were almost full strength so that was so nice." "I feel pretty good about our team right now, I thought we could match up well with them if not for a few holes where we lose points. All in all I am happy as we head into our first home meet next week."

Top Moses Lake results were keyed by the 1-2 finishes in the long jump (Justyn Simmons and Jared Crowell) and shot put (Brandon Bradley and Chris Guerra).

Simmons finished with a 19-7.5 and Crowell a 19-6.75.

Bradley threw for 43-01 and Guerra, 43-00. Bradley also threw 135-04 in the discus to capture that title as well.

Finishing in second place during the meet were  Cameron Ballard who did so in the high jump with a 5-10 and Crowell who triple jumped to a distance of 38-09.

Timothy Johnson ended up in third with a time of 16.73 in the 110-meter hurdles.

Lowell Kirkwood ended up fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.64.

Cesar Sanabia also took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.85.

Other fifth place finishes were recorded by Andrew Escamilla (javelin, 136-03) and Cameron Law (pole vault, 11-06).

The 4x100-meter relay team of Jordan Koon, Steven Cline, Law and Simmons took fourth with a time of 46.2, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Escamilla,   Sanabia, Hayden Wise, and Kirkwood finished in fifth place with a final time of 3:55.13.

Next week the Chiefs track teams host a Big 9 home meet, Thursday, starting at 4 p.m.
