MATTAWA - In three contests that were reported late because of the team's travel schedule the week ending March 26, Wahluke High soccer scored one win against three quality opponents.

The first contest, on March 22, was a 1-0 loss at Highland. The second was a 4-0 win at Seattle Academy on March 25, and the third was a 1-0 loss at University Prep in Seattle on March 26.

The loss to UP came as the result of a defensive error. It opened the door for a UP goal in the 47th minute.

"This is why we scheduled such tough teams for our non-league games," coach Arthur de Victoria said. "We wanted to test things out against teams that would punish mistakes."

It was a good offensive contest for the Warriors. They had nine shots on goal and forced the UP keeper to extraordinary action on six of the attempts. Cesar Tlatelpa and Alan Caro combined for six saves for Wahluke.

The loss to Highland left the defending state A champs with a 3-1 record in the South Central A Conference. The loss to UP dropped their season record to 4-2.

The Highland game was played on a muddy field, and the players did not adjust their footing early enough. The Scotties scored on a Wahluke mistake in the16th minute and made it hold up with a stingy defense.

The Warriors had only five shots on goal for the game, and only two of them really tested the Highland goalie.

The SA contest featured the offense of Eugenio Cruz and Antonio Ramos. Cruz scored the first goal in the first half on an assist by Ramos. The final goal, by Pedro Acevedo, came on an assist by Cruz.

Ramos was involved in the third goal, feeding the ball to Jorge Lopez in the 58th minute.

The second goal was scored on a penalty kick by Miguel Ramirez. He was taken down in the box by the SA goalie.

"Miguel slotted it away nicely," de Victoria said.
