Tim Woodworth, 62, died on May 24th, 2014 surrounded by family and friends. Tim suffered from Frontotemporal Dementia, specifically Picks Disease, which impacted both his mind and body. Tim was born in Sandpoint, Idaho to Alton and Lillian Woodworth. He grew up and spent the majority of his time in Moses Lake alongside many lifelong friends. Tim attended Moses Lake High School and went on to Washington State University where he was an active member of Alpha Tau Omega and graduated with a degree in Zoology. Tim is survived by his mother Lillian, as well as his brother, sister, children and countless friends.

A big thank you goes out to Samaritan Healthcare for a great community health fair. One of the best things about living in a small community like Moses Lake happened this past Saturday. The local hospital gave back to the area with their annual health fair. This was a chance to get a reading on your own health without the high cost normally involved. You just won't find this type of community involvement in most major city hospitals. It is a wonderful resource for the people in our area.

Louis James Gehrts, "Jim", of Royal City, WA, a truck driver and adventurer, died May 15, 2014 of a sudden heart attack at age 63. Jim was born June 8, 1950 to Katherine and Lewis Gehrts in Seattle, WA. Jim attended Garfield High School in Seattle and then enlisted in the Army. He served in Vietnam with the G Company 75th Airborne Rangers. After returning from service he became a long-haul truck driver for Allied Van Lines. He crisscrossed the country for 30 years and put over a million miles on his odometer.

John Hopkins passed away November 11, 2013 at his home in Wickenburg, Arizona ten months after a diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). John was born in Northampton, England February 8, 1946 to a U.S. Army Air Corps Serviceman dad and a British war-time ambulance driver mom. He grew up in central Washington working hay, wheat, sheep, and potatoes; graduated from the University of Washington; and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for seven years, including two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. After the Army, John's career carried him through construction, sales, and property management. Throughout his life, John was an active volunteer for civic improvement, serving on boards and committees for organizations including Evergreen Rural Water of Washington, City of Ephrata, and Silverdale Whaling Days. In his retirement in Arizona, John managed the construction of his new home and found many ways to be of use in his church and community, including service on civic boards and mentoring high school students. John had a big servant's heart and always endeavored to apply his skills and energy to the betterment of the community around him.

Born to one of the original pioneer families in Washington state, he lived his childhood years in Mountlake Terrace, WA. Roger Neil Ellestad was born September 16, 1957 in Moses Lake, Wash. to Vern and Evelyn Ellestad. His childhood was spent playing and working with his brothers Larry and Tom and sister Alice, along with a large extended family. He graduated from Moses Lake High School in 1975. Roger worked at the family business (Vern's Moses Lake Meats) during his teen years and became a Journeyman meat cutter. He also proudly served in the National Guard. He studied electronics at Wenatchee Valley College and put his training to use at Tree Top in Wenatchee. He remembered his work and friends in Wenatchee with much happiness. He worked at Vern's Meats until his health failed the last two years. He suffered a massive stroke in 2013 and was recovering and rebuilding his life in Spokane. Although seriously disabled, two months ago he moved into an apartment and was planning a happy life in what he called his "new normal." He died of natural causes in his home on Saturday, May 10, 2014 in Spokane, Wash. He was a beloved member of his family and the communities he was part of and will be deeply missed. Roger trusted the love of God and was at peace in his life.

Wanda Faye Davis
Wanda Faye Davis passed away on February 7, 2014 after a year long battle with leukemia. She was born in Dallas, Texas on November 18, 1946. She is survived by her husband Mike Davis, daughters Paula, Debra and Kristy, 5 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren. Wanda married Mike Davis in 1986 in Moses Lake, Washington and immediately began enjoying watersports, skiing, golf and camping. She was a member of Moses Lake Golf and Country club where she became totally hooked on golf. She continued this love when living in Spokane and was an 18 year member of Wandermere Golf course womens club. In Spokane she became known for her love of cooking and hosting parties for her friends. She became an avid and accomplished landscaper and had a beautiful park like yard and garden. She and Mike fell in love with Gonzaga womens basketball and were season ticketholders for years. In 2013 while undergoing chemotherapy she never missed a game and even went to Las Vegas for the WCC basketball championship tournament.

The trail will add a wonderful scenic walking/biking path through Blue Heron Park and provide a safe connection for cyclists to bike out to Mae Valley and Moses Pointe and beyond. The city and the Trail Planning Team have worked many years for this trail and it has broad support from groups and individuals across our city. Trails such as this not only benefit our citizens but they also increase tourism. Neighboring cities like Wenatchee, Yakima, Spokane, and Coeur d'Alene all support trail systems that enhance their cities and attract visitors.

Vernon J. Miller, age 80, passed away on Thursday, May 1st, 2014, at Spokane Hospice House in Spokane, WA. He was born September 9th,1933 in Minot, North Dakota, to Clarence and Mureen Miller. Vernon grew up in Minot, and served in the armed forces in the Korean War 1952-1954. Vern married Beverly Hoglund on September 18th,1954 in Minot, N.D.. They were married for 59 1/2 years.

On March 2, 2014, Reva Maude (Jackson) McMains returned to the loving arms of the lord to spend eternity with the love of her life, Joe McMains. She was born June 16, 1932, in Abilene, TX, to Virgil and Ernestine (Moore) Jackson. She had five sisters and two brothers. Virgil was a Chaplin in the Army and was sent to the Pacific Theater so the family spent time on the west coast while he was gone. They ran a dry cleaning business in Salem OR, Wenatchee and also in Moses Lake. All of the Jackson kids worked for the cleaners throughout their schooling.

Improved planting prospects depressed corn futures Friday. The grain and soy markets bounced Thursday night, but corn turned lower in Friday action. Talk of improved planting weather apparently triggered fresh selling, since farmers could get a great deal of grain planted during the prospective window expected next week. July corn tumbled 7.5 cents to $4.995/bushel at its Friday settlement, while December lost 5.5 cents to $4.94.
Basin Select Gold state champs
The Cobra Basin Select Gold 13U soccer team, consisting of girls from Othello, Warden, Moses Lake, and Ephrata, recently traveled to Lacey, WA, to compete in the Washington State Cup. The team went 3-0 in the tournament to earn rights as state champs. The team won its first game on Saturday against Tyne Castle of Seattle, 2-0. On Sunday, Basin Select Gold defeated Kitsap Pumas 3-1, and in the championship game defeated Cascade of Issaquah 1-0 in overtime.

I received an email that read in part, "Governor Jay Inslee channeled President Obama by signing an executive order to create a carbon tax task force under the guise of lowering carbon emissions. This is Governor Inslee's first step in implementing a carbon tax - a gas tax that could reach $1.17 per gallon." A call to the Governor's office confirmed it.

Jo-Ann Fabric files building permit for Moses Lake store
MOSES LAKE - National retailer Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores is making progress on their move to Moses Lake. A company spokesperson confirmed in February they were planning on opening a new Jo-Ann store in Moses Lake sometime in 2014, according to a previous Columbia Basin Herald article. At the time, company officials declined to share more details about the new store, including the location.

Orville (Ike) Ransford
On April the 16th Orville (Ike) Ransford left this world and entered into the Kingdom God where he joins his beloved wife Carol. Ike passed away peacefully in his sleep with son Tim & his family nearby. Ike battled cancer the last few months of his life. Ike is longtime resident of Moses Lake. Having moved from White Swan Washington in 1962 to become the Principle of Peninsula Elementary School and retired after 24 years of service to public education. Ike is survived by his 4 sons Robert, Micheal, Timothy, and Curtis and their families... Ike has 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Please come join and celebrate his life at the services which will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic church in Moses Lake, on Saturday May the 3rd at 11:00 pm.
