Moses Lake doctor honored by Boy Scouts Wednesday

MOSES LAKE - As the Boy Scouts of America gather their badges and awards, so too do their leaders. The Columbia Basin District of Boy Scouts invite the community to honor Dr. Bruce Noonan as Good Scout of the Year Wednesday morning.

Warren Lybbert, district executive of the Columbia Basin District of Boy Scouts of America, said the Moses Lake doctor is being honored for many things.

The event consists of a by-donation breakfast at Pillar Rock Grill. Noonan will be honored and Brad Bergener will make a keynote address.

All proceeds from the event will support Boy Scout activities. Lybbert said the two Cub Scout packs and five Boy Scout troops can be seen in the community marching in parades or participating in community events, like the recent City Wide Clean-up in Moses Lake.

Brad Bergener, of Zillah, Chairman for Scouting in the Lower Yakima Valley, will speak on how he utilized Scouting skills to overcome his childhood disabilities to become owner of the Medstart Cabulance and community leader, according to Lybbert.

Noonan is a Dartmouth College, Dartmouth Medical School and University of Washington School of Medicine graduate. After an extensive medical career, including three years of active duty as a U.S. Navy flight surgeon, he joined the Moses Lake Clinic branch of the Wenatchee Valley Clinic (both are now Confluence Health clinics).

He retired after 10 years with the clinic, 22 years with the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, and two terms as the president of the Grant-Adams County Medical Society.

Before his medical career began, Noonan was a Cub Scout. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at age 16 and eventually earned his God and Country Award. Noonan also served as a scoutmaster.

Noonan's work in the community and especially with the Boy Scouts continues to earn him awards nationally, and now locally. Most recently, in 2009 he was recognized with the United States President's "Call to Duty" lifetime volunteer service award.
