Royal tykes get first taste of school

ROYAL CITY - Numerous Royal Slope children got their first taste of public school recently when Red Rock Elementary held its annual kindergarten registration. They had the gymnasium all to themselves from 3:30-5:00 p.m.

After registration day, there are about 130 kindergarteners signed up. About 65 have attended Royal School District's pre-school. Others have attended private or government sponsored pre-schools.

Incoming students enrolled in kindergarten at Red Rock for the fall of 2014. Each family then moved through preparation stations put up by the kindergarten teachers.

At the first stop, the students received a name tag and had their pictures taken. The remainder of the stations provided students and their parents with different tools to bring home in order to help them prepare for a successful kindergarten year.

"They included items such as a calendar with ideas to work on over the summer, packets to practice writing their names, identify numbers and letters, and to work on their counting," counselor Nicole Schwartz said.

There were teachers at each station. They greeted the students and demonstrated how to play the games or use the items that were being sent home.

"It is a great way for the incoming students to meet and become familiar with the kindergarten teachers and paraprofessionals," Schwartz said. "The teachers and office staff work hard to make sure registration night is successful, fun, and educational."

Parents who still need to register their students for kindergarten can do so at the Red Rock office during school hours. You are asked to bring a copy of the child's immunization records and birth certificate.
