Out of the shadows, Mattawa chickens legalized

MATTAWA - Chickens are making a comeback in Mattawa. The city council has decided residents can have their hens and eat their eggs too.

But chickens will be a protected species - somewhat. Owners will not be allowed to slaughter the unproductive ones. Within the city limits, that is.

The legalized chicken issue was dealt with at city hall like any other. There was discussion and more discussion. There was no fast track for the feathery ones.

The only advantage the chickens had was that then Councilman, now Mayor Scott Hyndman's wife Linda was on their side. She likes chickens, appreciates their value to the family table, and she proposed legalization.

Mrs. Hyndman's negotiating has made it possible for families to get eggs in the back yard. However, some families may not get full benefit.

A household will be limited to six hens, and those hens will be on birth control. Roosters will not be allowed.

According to the ordinance passed by the council on May 1, families that choose to keep chickens will have to purchase a $10 chicken license each year. There will be a $50 coop fee, which will cover the cost of coop inspection.

According to the new law, hens must be kept in a coop. If they roam, they could be apprehended and incarcerated by law enforcement.

There is no mention of an exercise yard in the ordinance. Asked if that might bring a howl of protest from PETA, City Clerk Robin Newcomb said:

"I'm sure an exercise yard would be okay."

For now, chickens need to appreciate their new lease on city life.

And lay eggs.

Or render Mrs. Hyndman's efforts useless.
