Zillah girl steals show at Vanderholm track meet

ROYAL CITY - Royal High School's Ron Vanderholm Invitational Track Meet last Friday may as well have been called the Alexis Redfield Show.

The Zillah long distance star left the field in her wake three times to sweep the 800, 1600 and 3200. She ended the meet ranked No. 8 in the state in the 3200 with a time of 11.59.26.

Also putting on a show was Lauren Newman of LaSalle. Ranked No. 2 in the 100 and No. 3 in the 200, she ran away from the field in both races clocking 12.73 and 26.45.

Umatilla's Fabian Cardenas won the boys 1600 with a 4:28.63 clocking. He improved his personal record by more than 10 seconds, and there was no competitor in sight.

Redfield's effort led the Leopards to the girls team title with six first places and 113 points. Kittitas was second with 75. Royal finished 10th with 31.5, and Wahluke took 17th with 10.5. The top eight individuals in each event scored for their team.

In the boys competition, Zillah buried the field again. The Leopards had five first places on the way to 131 points. Kittitas was next with 74.5 points. Wahluke finished 11th with 24.5, and Royal took 13th with 20.

Royal's boys chances were hampered by the absence of Michael Valentine, a state contender in three events. He was resting an injury in hopes of being ready for sub-districts this week.
