Gout
Gout is one of the most common causes of arthritis, accounting for approximately 5% of all cases of arthritis or 1 person in 100 in the U.S. Gout results from the deposition of uric acid crystals into the cartilage of a joint. This happens because the amount of uric acid in the person’s blood gets too high to remain in solution and precipitates into crystals, much like too much sugar in water causes crystallization of the sugar. The deposition of these crystals into the cartilage around the joint is intensely inflammatory producing not only severe pain, but also redness, swelling and heat. By all estimates gout is the most painful type of arthritis; the intensity of the pain has been described by sufferers as so severe that it hurts whenever someone walks into their room.

Midori Osumi
Midori Osumi passed away Saturday, April 10, 2010 after a short illness with family at her bedside; a 12-year cancer survivor. Midori was raised in the Twin Falls area. After finishing her education, she enjoyed a period of travel. As a career, she worked with the Internal Revenue Service, Washington DC and Los Angeles. In 1950, Midori found the love of her life and married Fred, who has preceded her in death; they had one child, Gloria. The young family started farming on the Basin Project in its early years. Midori enjoyed gardening and took advantage of the Basin’s great weather. She was also a long term volunteer at the Grant County Fair, no matter what the weather and a founding member of the Nisei Woman’s Club. Midori was blessed with a giving spirit that found any opportunity to help others. After the attacks of 9-11, she made dolls for children who lost family members. As a member of a homemaker’s club, she made bibs that were used at Samaritan Hospital. Fish trembled at the name, Midori, as they knew they stood not a chance against her as a fisherman. Midori is survived by her beloved daughter, Gloria Vorhies, a son-in-law Miles Douglass, 2 brothers and 3 sisters left of 12, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and other relatives. Service will be held Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Benson’s Funeral Home, 104 W 5th Ave, Moses Lake, followed by a dinner at the O’Sullivan Grange.

Ruby Ruth Wiltz
04/21/1910 — 02/02/2010
Ruby Ruth Wiltz, 99, a life long resident of Washington passed away in Walla Walla, WA on February 2, 2010. Ruby was born in Molson, Wa., the 4th of 14 children. She grew up and attended school in Chesaw. In 1928 she married George H. Wiltz in Greenwood, Canada and lived on their ranch south of Chesaw. In 1944 the family moved to Chewelah. It was in Chewelah that she became a certified Practical nurse, a profession she followed throughout her life. In 1949 they moved to Moses Lake. In 1964 they again established a permanent residence in Chesaw and became involved in the communities of Oroville, Molson and Chesaw until 2001 when she moved to Walla Walla to be closer to her son.

Miss Moses Lake
Reader disappointed with change
I am a past member of the Miss Moses Lake Pageant Scholarship Committee and the first executive director of the program. I was an active member of the committee for 46 years. During my involvement, three Miss Moses Lakes have become Miss Washington and competed for Miss America. I am concerned with the current direction of the Miss Moses Lake Pageant. In the past, we had bylaws stating contestants must be a resident of Moses Lake for at least six months prior to the pageant. I am concerned to see contestants from other communities competing and receiving the crown and honor of Miss Moses Lake. In the past three years, the title of Miss Moses Lake has been represented by young ladies who do not hail from Moses Lake.

Reader concerned about residency
To call the pageant that occurred in Moses Lake March 20th “The Miss Moses Lake Pageant” is a mockery and an insult to the citizens of Moses Lake. Reader concerned about speeding drivers
I have been a Moses Lake resident for three years. I currently reside off of Westshore Road and Road 4. I drive to Wenatchee 6 nights per week for work. My nightly route starts on Road 4, until I hit Dodson, then on to Road 5 which puts me on Adams Road. I am fully aware that the speed limit on those county roads are 55 mph. My problem is, and this is has been on more than one occasion, I have witnessed Grant County Police Officers speeding excessively.
