(ARA) - Las Vegas is known for its shows. Whether you want to see the Blue Man Group, an outstanding magic show or one of the many entertaining Cirque du Soleil shows, Vegas is the place to do it. When you think about it, costumes are one of the major parts of each of these productions, and costume designers play major roles in bringing each performance to life.

A fashion design degree could lead you to a career in costume design. Costume designers create the clothes and accessories actors wear in performances on television, movies, concerts and plays. They work closely with production teams, hair and makeup artists and a variety of other industry professionals.

Costume designers may be responsible for researching and designing fabrics and costumes from different time periods, sketching, sewing, developing budgets and more. A costume designer may even be in charge of overseeing costume fittings and conducting alterations. One of the best ways to get prepared for a career involving any of these tasks is through fashion design career training. Many schools offer this type of training, so it is in your best interest to shop around until you find the one that's right for you.

Keep in mind that costume designing is only one of the many career opportunities you can pursue with a degree in fashion design.

Other career opportunities in this field may include:

* Fashion merchandiser

* Stylist

* Fashion writer

* Fashion photographer

* Clothing pattern maker

Fashion design programs can teach you about the creation, production and marketing of apparel. You can also learn about the fundamentals of sourcing and how to use textiles. If you're considering fashion design training, look for a school with a hands-on program and a quality curriculum that can help prepare you for this competitive career field.
