Marion C. Spence
Marion C. Spence was born on March 12, 1918 in Omaha, Nebraska to immigrant parents Simon B. Epstein and Adele Marcus Epstein. She died at the age of nearly 93. Marion was born the year that 6% of the world's population died during an influenza epidemic and as World War 1 was winding down. Her family moved to southern California when she was a young girl. She has seen many changes in the world during her lifetime. Marion was a "City Girl" most of her life until she moved to Royal City nearly 10 years ago to live with her daughter and son in law, Dwain and Marilyn Forester. Marion married her husband, James William Spence, during the depths of the depression. He preceded her death in 1979. She is survived by her children, afore mentioned daughter Marilyn, Donna Johnson of Star Idaho and James William Spence Jr of Redding, California, and her brother Elliott Epstein of San Jose, California. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Jay S. Estern. She has 12 grandchildren and a great many great and great great grandchildren. GRANT COUNTY PUD
Be quick! Close the barn door! Our wonderful hydropower might get rustled by a foreign mega-corporation. What will we do? What should we do? Should we just promise to provide all the cheap electricity the large industrial corporation wants? They say they need huge amounts of our cheap electricity to provide good union jobs and local tax dollars. (Foreign owned companies don't pay U.S. income tax do they?) Are local jobs and taxes the two most important factors determining the price and allocation of our hydropower? Can we give one mega-corporation a sweetheart deal and then deny the same arrangement to the others that will show up here in Grant County wanting our cheap electricity? Or is that horse already out of the barn?

Teaching hatred?
The cries for civility after the Tucson shootings have not much impressed thousands of protesters in Wisconsin. There, many public-employee-union leaders, teachers and other public employees have used disruption and intimidation - rather than reasoned debate and respect for representative democracy - to try to get their way.
GANGS
The fire station on Mae Valley Road got tagged. Another gang tagged over the first tag. The radio said: gang prevention and teen pregnancy prevention, down in Yakima, have lost there funding. These groups will reapply for funding jointly.

When you think of the nation of Switzerland, you may think of its Alpine peaks, its high-quality watches or its renowned chocolate. You may also think of the peaceful nature of its people. Not only have the Swiss long stayed out of the wars that raged around them, but the rate of violent crime is low.
Domino Theory II
In the 1960s and 1970s, politicians and academics came up with something called "the domino theory." It held that if one weak government in Asia got overrun by communists, its small neighbors would follow in short order.
Kenneth M. Wedge
Kenneth M. Wedge, born in El Monte, California on August 21,1939 to William and Madeline Wedge. He was one of four siblings, two older brothers, and a younger sister. His love of cars had him working on and speeding around Southern California until his late twenties. Looking to start a family, he moved to Montana with his new wife and raised two boys. He relocated to Nevada in the late 80's, during the Las Vegas construction boom, where he worked, prospered and retired out of Laborer Union 872 in 1994. After retiring, he built custom wood furniture and turned that deep passion into a profession. He started a Los Vegas business called "Wedge Woodworks" with his youngest son. The business lasted for nine years.
RELIGION IN SCHOOL
This letter is in response to last week's letter written by high school student Kassandra Wareham, who asked if religion is legal in public schools. The short answer to Miss Wareham's question is yes. It would be illegal, however, if the school was sponsoring this "Pray Until Something Happens" club (PUSH) or if religious doctrine was included in the school curriculum. Various Supreme Court rulings have created such confusion over this issue that the best possible way to understand the legality of separation of church and state can be found in the First Amendment, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble." Surely, this PUSH club is a benign, peaceful, student-governed assemblage. To expand on your legal understanding of separation of church and state, let's remember President Obama's recent inclusion of Christian scripture during his memorial speech at a public university after the Tucson shooting in Arizona. Illegal? No. To address a few other concerns in your letter, it seems your desire to start a gay/straight alliance club is in reaction to PUSH. Do you know that the creation of your club involves the Christian virtues of love and compassion? Many Christians agree that the act of homosexuality is sinful, but all Christians agree that Jesus loves everyone, regardless of who they love. I encourage you to start a gay/straight alliance. But I also ask you to redirect your passion to a social issue that is more pertinent, and understand the law. PUSH and your club are not in conflict. Our forefathers would agree with this. Good luck!
THANKS
We are grateful to you for publishing our letter to the editor concerning a warning stop sign and a larger stop sign in peripheral view.
SPENDING CUTS
The House Spending Cuts Bill cuts spending by about $61.5 billion until September was passed by the House of Representatives on a mostly partisan vote of 235-189. The bill would cut domestic programs spending by 14 percent. These cuts affect the lives of middle and lower incomes families disproportionately, when compared to the wealthy. Most of these programs are strong, helpful, vital improvements to the quality of life for the majority of Americans.

Fresh News from MarDon
MARDON RESORT - Ice remains a problem for boater access to the Sand dunes on Potholes Reservoir. Just one more warm south wind and the dunes could be ice free. Boaters are catching walleye using blade baits on the humps just off the face of the sand dunes in 15' to 45' of water. The Goose Island area on Potholes Reservoir has been producing good walleye and smallmouth bass with blade baits and drop shoting techniques. The Lind Coulee arm of the reservoir continues to hold boat stopping ice. However the boat launch area off of M. Road has open water and available "fish action." Bank fishing is most available in the Lind Coulee. Make sure you post your vehicle access pass issued by the DFW as it is required in all pull offs in the Lind Coulee areas. The Seep Lakes are still primarily iced over for boat activity. There is some open water on the shorelines to try your hand at ice-off trout fishing.

MOSES LAKE BUDGET
Moses Lake 2011 budget, Nov. 15, 2010, states the water/sewer fund has roughly $18 million set aside, it also has $9.2 million in account fund for future water/sewer construction that has been established. Also, water/sewer fund will receive $3 million from a clean up lawsuit brought by the City of Moses Lake against the Department of Defense, Boeing and Lockheed Martin, Dec. 24, 2010. That gives the water/sewer department $30.2 million in their account. Water/sewer basic fee is about $62.75; there is also a $5 stormwater fee, which makes it about $67.75 per month. 8,800 households pay this fee, which comes to another $596,200 per month in the water/sewer fund.

HB 1609
As a teacher I am opposed to HB 1609. This bill wants to take away a great Evaluation Collaborative Pilot Project that is currently happening in Washington State and replace it with a one size fits all canned mandate. With a collaborative process in place the evaluation will be fair and equitable and both parties are able to agree. If this bill gets through the legislature it will instead give power to principals who can then arbitrarily remove an employee and take power away from the school board who is elected by the public. I believe that each school district should have the ability to set their own evaluation process where all parties can come to agreement instead of a one size fits all model approach. Olympia is known for making policy decisions both good and bad. This policy decision is a step in the wrong direction if adopted.

The invitation was extended to spouses as well. A fantastic time was had by everyone and we felt truly appreciated by whoever gave this gift to us. Since we cannot thank this benefactor in person, we would like to take this opportunity to thank them via the newspaper in hopes that they see it, and realized we were amazed by their generosity. No one has ever done anything like that for us before.

RELAY FOR LIFE
I have family and friends who have heard the word cancer, but I hadn't ever heard of Relay for Life until two years ago when one of the middle school students in the club I supervise asked if she could have a team. It was a great community service opportunity and even though it was only two months away I agreed. I knew she was passionate about the cause so my work would be just to "show up."

RELIGION IN SCHOOL
My name is Kassandra Wareham and I am a student at Moses Lake High School. The other day, I was walking in the school halls, when I noticed that there were posters advertising an after school club called P.U.S.H., or Pray Until Something Happens. Is it just me or isn't it illegal to have religion in schools? Sure, they're not forcing it upon you, but I thought there was supposed to be a separation of church and state. They're allowing us to have a club too, so I am hoping to start a GSA (Gay/Straight Alliance) club to leave religion out of the picture. There are enough places to worship around town. Why bring it to the schools?
