It's hard to believe but we are going to be trout fishing in just a couple of weeks. The annual opener of the Quincy Wildlife Area lakes is coming up on March 1st, and this first trout season of the year is always popular. There is something special going on this year at Burke and Quincy lakes. Quincy Valley Tourism has come with a great idea to attract the attention of fishing families to their area. They are going to have a Trout Derby on Saturday, March 5th at the two lakes. They are putting in tagged trout with a total value of $5,000.00! One fish is worth a whopping $3,000.00. They will be on hand on that Saturday selling derby tickets, raffle tickets and handing out information about the Quincy Valley. You can learn all about the event by logging onto my web site (fishingmagician.com) and clicking on the ad at the top right of my Home Page. Scroll down on the Quincy Valley page you'll find directions on how to print out the rules and even a registration form. Plan on being in Quincy on March 5th for some fishing and fun and maybe some big money!

The Annual Game Feed banquet and auction put on by the Wenatchee Sportsmen's Association is coming up on Saturday, February 19th, and this is one of the oldest and largest events of its kind in Central Washington. Every year the Wenatchee Sportsmen's Association members spend thousands of volunteer hours and drive thousands of miles doing wildlife enhancement work in our area, and they also support several fishing and educational events. They are also responsible for the fencing project that protects our local bighorn sheep herd. All of this work is primarily funded by what is generated by the proceeds of the annual Game Feed. Not only are those who attend able to get bargain prices on a wide range of sporting goods, wildlife art, trips and other equipment that sportsmen can bid on, they are also served up a sumptuous meal that is exotic to say the least. Some examples of what's on the menu include elk with mushroom demi-glace, tarragon pheasant and venison Bourguignon. Be sure to get your tickets and attend this important function. We all benefit from it. Tickets are available at Hooked on Toys, One Shot Firearms and High Mountain Hunting.

One of my favorite events in Eastern Washington is coming up this weekend. Actually starting on Friday is the 22nd Annual Sportsman Show which is held at the Sundome in Yakima. I have always enjoyed spending a day at this show. I have been going long enough that it is almost a social event. I see a lot of the guides, tackle makers, retailers and others I have know for many years at the show. Some I only see once a year, but being able to spend some time with them here gives us a chance to get caught up. That's what's nice about this particular show. It is big, with a huge variety of things to see, but not so big that you can't spend some time with the exhibitors. It has the usual attractions for families, like the trout pond for the kids, great seminars, lots of photos and videos of great hunting and fishing adventures from local services to the Canadian and Alaskan lodges. There are always some great bargains offered by some of the shops that transfer a large part of their inventories to the show grounds. Last year I went to the show and still made it back in time to attend the Wenatchee Sportsmen's Association Game Feed.
