RELAY FOR LIFE

| February 18, 2011 5:00 AM

I have family and friends who have heard the word cancer, but I hadn't ever heard of Relay for Life until two years ago when one of the middle school students in the club I supervise asked if she could have a team. It was a great community service opportunity and even though it was only two months away I agreed. I knew she was passionate about the cause so my work would be just to "show up."

So much for showing up! We had a team of fifteen. All the food they could eat (mainly chips and a lot of sodas). All the supplies to camp and enough energy to fuel the track. We didn't raise much money that year but we did raise awareness. One of the most memorable moments I recall from that first relay, and the reason I keep coming back, is because of a story one of the chaperons shared. She wore a t-shirt with the picture of a little girl and in memory of written below the photo. I asked her who the child was. It was her daughter who had lost her battle with cancer at the age of two. She had come to relay in her memory. It had been less than a year since her passing. She stayed through the luminary ceremony, and her courage motivated me to become involved.

Last year the Frontier Middle School students raised over $8,000 for Relay for Life. Thinking about forming a team? The next team captain meeting is February 10th at 5:30 in the Frontier Middle School Library. Contact Sherri Osborne at 771-0768 if you have any questions or interested in forming a team. You too can help celebrate, remember and fight back!
