Hiatal Hernia
A hiatal hernia is an abnormality in which a portion of the esophagus or stomach protrudes from inside the abdomen, through an opening in the diaphragm muscles, up into the chest. The esophagus is a tubular structure that extends from the back of the throat through the central portion of the chest, down through an opening in the diaphragm muscles that separate the chest from the abdomen, and attaches to the stomach in the abdomen. The inner layer of the esophagus, the mucosa, is a smooth thin layer that produces a small amount of mucous to help swallowed food be propelled down the esophagus into the stomach with less friction during swallowing. These cells of the inner lining are sensitive to acid. The middle layer which is the functionally important layer is comprised solely of muscle. It is the contraction of this muscle layer that propels food from the throat down the esophagus into the stomach (swallowing). The terminal 2-3 inches of this muscle layer ends down by the stomach and functions as a valve that keeps contents of the stomach from coming back up into the esophagus. This area of muscle relaxes only when swallowed food reaches the end of the esophagus, or during vomiting.

Big oil
A few years ago, when SUVs still ruled American roads and gasoline prices were skyrocketing, consumers and politicians howled that oil companies were guilty of price-gouging because they refused to increase refinery capacity; the companies responded that it would be crazy to build more refineries to meet a spike in demand that was probably temporary. Now the other shoe has dropped: Demand has fallen through the floor, and oil companies are shutting down refineries as a result. And once again, consumer groups are accusing them of price-gouging.

TEA PARTY
Reader encourages support
Do you feel like you have an IRA account where you make 10% return on your investment, but the maintenance fees are 12%-20%? I went to my first “Tea Party” meeting about a month ago. More of a first investigation into what the “Tea Party of Grant County” is all about. I went with an open mind not trying to change anything, just to see if their ideals were in line with mine. If someone were to ask me, “are you a Republican or a Democrat?” I would say without doubt neither, per-se. At that meeting someone gave me a copy of the Declaration of Independence. Upon reading it I realized how near I felt to those same feelings of tyranny from our “government” I felt, then what feelings our founding fathers must have felt when they wrote it originally.

Like nothing else, Job Corps Civilian Conservation Centers work for young people and for America.

THANKS
Quincy students express appreciation for Newspapers in Education
I am writing to thank you for enrolling me in your Newspapers in Education program. For the past school year, my classes and I have learned about current events happening in our communities, state, nation, and the world. Having a local newspaper in the classroom allows us to read both together and independently; we can read about what interests us and what effects each of us as human beings. Newspapers also allow students to develop reasoning skills, separating facts from opinions. They can be used for students to practice their English grammar skills, but searching for nouns, verbs, and adjectives in an article. Finally, a gift of a newspaper can be a resource for writing a thank you card. Thanks again for allowing me and my students to participate in your program.

TOBACCO SALES
Reader disagrees with house bill
Earlier this year the legislature passed Senate Bill 5340, which made it illegal to order most tobacco products on the internet or by mail-order in order to prevent children from getting these products. This was done because the US Supreme Court said that checking for proof of age was illegal even if the package may contain tobacco. Bill SB5340, however, makes an exception for all cigars larger than a cigarette. This exception is bizarre for several reasons. First, the states’ own data collected by polling 200,000 public school children, clearly shows that cigar smoking among youth is essentially as big a problem as cigarette smoking. Second, if cigars were included in SB5340 the state would gain about $200 million a year in additional taxes; because all cigars purchased by Washington State consumers over the Internet or by mail-order (from out of state) legally escape all state taxes. By including all cigars in SB5340 the state would both better protect children from tobacco and gain $200 million per year in taxes. In addition, local cigars shops would greatly increase sales leading to additional employment opportunities.

STATE BUDGET
Reader offers advice
First if you are going to cut expenses anywhere, you should be willing to cut those in your own offices. How much money is spent on our elected officials on parties, dinners, lunches, transportation, etc., that can easily be cut? Perhaps you need to cut the number of hours of office staff. I believe you can easily cut everyone’s office budget and traveling expenditures by 10 percent. This also means cutting your own salaries. If other people in this state can live with their paychecks being smaller then you can too.
STATE BUDGET
Reader finds hidden food tax
First let me say that a sales tax is the most fair tax our state has. It is paid by the end consumer. If I can afford to purchase a new Lincoln car, I pay more tax than my friend who can only afford to buy a used Toyota. That is fair! The Senate’s proposed budget removes the sales tax exemption on agricultural fertilizers and crop protection chemicals used to produce food. The farmers of Washington state combine land, equipment, labor and capital with fertilizer and chemicals plus expertise to produce food. By taxing our imputes, you are using a “back door” approach to tax food! If you want to tax food, do so by putting a sales tax on food at the retail level so everyone, the end consumer, can see and pay the tax! Be up front with this! Spread the tax where it belongs — the end consumer instead of on the backs of a few farm voters. We are small farmers with two employees (my wife and myself). Your proposed tax will cost us approximately $5,000 annually (the cost of a very fine vacation.) Would our state Senators and Representatives be willing to tax themselves this amount to balance the state’s budget?

MOSQUITOES
Readers disagrees with DOE
I would like to respond to the letter by Janis Gilbert, communications manager for state Department of Ecology. Ms. Gilbert implied she was pleased, but surprised by the large turnout for the mosquito control permit hearing. The bureaucrats shouldn’t have been surprised or happy. They knew there would be hell to pay for their attempt to effectively stop the killing of adult mosquitoes in Eastern Washington and had scheduled the meeting in the fire hall at 1 p.m. on a work day. A room, that by law, can’t hold more than 60 people. That wasn’t an accident! By this strategy they hoped to downplay the opposition to their high-handed power grab.

THANKS
Reader appreciates service
I would like to thank Mike and John with First Choice Restoration. In November I had a water leak in my home. I contacted a company I found in the phone book that advertised water and mold detection and prevention. They came out on Dec. 3 and verified the leak, returned on Dec. 4 and set up equipment for 72 hours to dry it out. I never saw them again until Jan. 11. They never checked for mold and by then me and my pup were unable to stay because of the mold. When I called Mike at First Choice, he came right out and within three weeks myself and my puppy are now able to live in our home. Mike and John turned a terrible health hazard into a wonderful peaceful outcome. I’m retired and on fixed income. They worked with my insurance company and relieved a very stressful situation. Thanks again Mike and John.

Water is not the 'infinite' resource many believe
(ARA) - Do you ever think about how the water coming out of your faucet makes its way into your home? Or look out at the river as you're driving to work and expect it will always look the same? GRANT COUNTY COURTS
Reader claims innocence, victim of system
I’m writing in concern of our judicial system in Grant County. I’m currently being held on a burglary, where I’m going to trial and another case of a driving while license suspended in the first degree and alleged possession of a controlled substance — meth. On the burglary, I was arrested with another person who took full responsibility and plead guilty but yet I still have to prove my innocence by going to trial and on the driving while license suspended — first degree, given a citation and being released when another officer, over ranking the officer who stopped me, held me against my will. I’m currently waiting trial on both cases and have written statements and a lot in my defence to prove my innocence. But yet the judicial system in Grant County Superior Court fails to offer lesser deals. I was arrested July 19, 2009, under false pretenses of driving while license suspended in the first degree and on the burglary, but there is a lack of probable cause. A witness says I was a suspect due to my goatee. I write to let the public know how low our officers lack on investigating crimes, and our system finds you guilty before being innocence. I’ve been in county (jail) for seven months awaiting trial.

STATE BUDGET
Reader suggests cutting expenses
There are going to have to be cuts in state spending, there’s no way around it. What shouldn’t be cut are essential services like law enforcement, corrections, education and emergency response. Everything else should be on the table: salary cuts, benefit cuts, reduced services, sell state owned land, privatize some public parks, end state owned liquor stores and let grocery stores sell liquor. Increasing taxes will only slow the recovery, while lowering taxes will create an incentive to do business in this state.
