Want a great sports getaway? Look to Boston and New York

(ARA) - With the warmer weather here, it's time to take in one of the annual rites of summer: Trips to see your favorite sports teams go on the road.

When it comes to sports, Boston and New York have been two of the epicenters of professional sports for decades. Whether Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park, or Boston Garden or Madison Square Garden, sports is more than just bragging rights in these two East Coast cities.

When you think baseball, New York and Boston instantly stand out in most fans' minds. Since the beginning of the 20th century, baseball has been a fixture in those cities, with the Boston Red Sox joining baseball in 1901 and the New York Yankees in 1903. The New York Mets, while not as storied as the other two franchises, have won two championships.

Both the Yankees and Mets have new stadiums that opened in 2009 and drew huge crowds in that first season. If you can get tickets, make sure that you have a place to sleep. There are a lot of New York hotels that are short subway rides away from the Yankees in the Bronx or the Mets in Queens.

A great activity is to take tours of the new stadiums. Most stadium tours offer terrific behind-the-scenes access of the venues, and if you're in town on an off day, then it's a great way to stay in the sporting frame of mind. Make sure to make reservations in advance since they are prone to selling out.

While both New York teams opened new stadiums, the Boston Red Sox have been in the same, cozy confines of Fenway Park since 1912. It may lack some of the amenities that newer parks have, but it offers history that few remaining stadiums can rival. As in New York, Boston hotels are a short ride on the "T" - Boston's mass transit - from the Green Monster and Pesky's Pole.

Come the end of summer, it's time to prepare for football season. The New York Jets and New York Giants will share a brand-new stadium across the Hudson River in New Jersey, while the New England Patriots continue to sell out their stadium west of Boston. In either case, nearby hotels and motels are plentiful.

Of course, it's always safest to make sure that you have tickets and lodging reservations well in advance of the game you want. Take me out to the ball game, indeed.
