Boys tennis remains unbeaten, take care of Kennewick

MOSES LAKE — An undefeated start to the 2010 season is what Moses Lake High School’s boys tennis team hoped to keep on Monday when they played host to Kennewick.

Not only did they keep their record intact but they also played inhospitable host in a 6-1 win.

No. 1 singles player Connor Lange recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win, while the Chiefs’ No. 2 Cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win.

At No. 4 singles, Karl Bessey won 6-1, 6-0.

All three Moses Lake (3-0) doubles teams won, including No.1 team Dominic Cacchiotti and Levi Huddleston (6-1, 6-3), the No. 2 duo of Adam Coulson and Tyler Knapp (6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), and No. 3 teammates Michael MeKonen and Justin Nunez (6-1, 3-6, 6-2).

Othello Boys 4, Quincy 1

QUINCY — Othello boys tennis swept doubles action against Quincy yesterday and that was enough to propel the Huskies to a 4-1 win in Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) action.

Othello’s teams of Max Harris and Ben Taft won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 while Parker Davis and Taylor Vigneri won 7-6, 6-0 at No. 2 and Marcus Garza and Wesley Gogswell pulled off a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3.

Quincy’s Jamie Almaguer recorded the Jacks’ only win on the day with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Othello’s Ryan Garza.

David Charles of Othello posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Quincy’s Garrett Van Dyke at No. 1 singles.

Ephrata Boys 3, Selah 2

EPHRATA — Behind a sweep at double the Ephrata Tigers tennis team pulled out a 3-2 home win over Selah yesterday.

Connor and Hunter Sears won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, Chris Ortega and Scott Hornsby won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2, and the No. 3 team of Michael McDonnell and Michael Bosnar took home a 7-5, 6-4 triumph.

Tigers singles players Kevin Bertelsen (No. 1) lost 6-1, 6-1, and Thomas Pheasant (No. 2) fell 6-1, 6-4.

Kennewick Girls 4, Moses Lake  3

MOSES LAKE — So close to a win may still mean defeat but the Moses Lake girls tennis team continues to show improvement.

The Chiefs lost 4-3 on Monday to visiting Kennewick in a dual meet that went down to the last match of the day.

Amanda Hart and Courtney Kunjara, playing at No. 1 doubles, fell in a tight 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 defeat and Kennewick held on for the team win.

Moses Lake (1-2) won at No. 2 singles behind the play of Rachel Hofstetter in a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win and at No. 3 singles as Melissa Calder won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Calder and Hofstetter remain undefeated so far this season.

No. 1 Chief Rachel Korth dropped a narrow 7-5, 6-4 decision.

The No. 2 doubles team of Iris Banks and Micaiah Stones took home the other Moses Lake win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

“We had four three setters and we came out even on those,” Chiefs coach Jon Wrigley said. “Almost every match was tight.”

Othello Girls 3, Quincy 2

QUINCY — Othello swept doubles play and the Lady Huskies survived two defeats in singles play as they held on for a 3-2 win yesterday.

Othello’s top doubles team Kayla Spor and Jody Walker won 6-2, 6-1, while the No. 2 team of Jocelyn Cantu and Emma Hymus won 6-3, 6-0, and the No.3 Lady Tigers duo crusied to a 6-2, 6-1 win.

Quincy’s Ciara Rasmussen held on to win a tough 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 match at No. 1 singles over Othello’s Ashley Snyder.

Quincy’s Tiffany Yates won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Selah Girls 4, Ephrata 1

EPHRATA — The No. 3 doubles team of Courtney Bergman and Allison Pheasant pulled out a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win for the Ephrata Lady Tigers but it wasn’t enough to hold off Selah in a 4-1 defeat yesterday.
